It seems like Michigan State and Louisville reach the Elite Eight every year—doesn't it?
Well, it's certainly close. Since Tom Izzo took over as the Spartans head coach in 1995, Michigan State has reached the Elite Eight nine times. Meanwhile, since Rick Pitino took over as the head honcho at Louisville in 2001, the Cardinals have reached the Elite Eight six times.
So, no, these programs aren't in the Elite Eight every single year. But they certainly come close.
And the fact that either team has gotten this far is, quite frankly, a surprise. Louisville dismissed Chris Jones from the team midseason and looked like a team without leaders or an identity. The Cardinals were always a bit underrated, sure, but the fact that this team found itself and has gone on a late run should tell you everything you need to know about the job Pitino has done this year.
Michigan State, meanwhile, didn't seem like a great team for much of the year. But it managed to turn things around after a brutal loss to Illinois, per Dana O'Neil of ESPN (via ABC News):
"Izzo said he believes he started seeing a change about 14 games ago, which would be when the Spartans played Northwestern -- one game after that Illini loss. They've lost just three times since then, one an epic Big Ten tournament title game battle of the ages to Wisconsin.
That near-miss jump-started this two-weekend march through the tournament, and has left Izzo -- always a bit of a softie for his team -- giddy with excitement, not just about what lies ahead but about what's already been accomplished.
"One more victory would be one of the sweeter moments of my career,'' he said. "If this team wins another game, it might be one of my favorite banners hanging from the rafters because of what this team went through.''
"
In their last eight games, the Spartans have beaten Indiana, Ohio State, Maryland, Georgia, Virginia and Oklahoma, while losing to Wisconsin in overtime in the Big Ten championship. What the Spartans are doing right now is not a fluke.
Louisville, on the other hand, has had an easier road, getting past UC Irvine, Northern Iowa and North Carolina State. The Cardinals are not going to sneak past Michigan State, however—not with the way the Spartans are playing.
Duke and Gonzaga aren't surprising anybody by being in position to reach the Final Four. Led by Jahlil Okafor and Justise Winslow, the Blue Devils have arguably the most pure talent outside of Kentucky. Gonzaga, meanwhile, has one of the more balanced, efficient and well-oiled offenses in the country.
This one is going to be fun, but when a team has the two best players on the court—as Duke has in Okafor and Winslow—that team normally wins in the Elite Eight. Gonzaga will put up a heck of a fight, but Duke is heading to the Final Four.
