Kell Brook vs. Jo Jo Dan: Winner, Recap and Analysis

Nate LoopMar 28, 2015

Kell Brook spent just 12 minutes in the ring on Saturday night. After a long, harrowing seven-month stretch with no fights, the short work Brook made of his opponent on Saturday night apparetly has him itching to get back in the ring.

Brook (34-0, 23 KOs) retained his IBF World Welterweight title on Saturday in brilliant fashion, defeating Jo Jo Dan (34-3, 18 KOs) via technical knockout after four rounds of brutally one-sided boxing at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, England.

The 28-year-old champion registered four knockdowns in the bout, two in the second round and two in the fourth and final round. Dan had no defense for Brook's quick, powerful right hand and was outclassed from the opening bell.

Showtime Sports provided highlights after the bout:

Brook, on cloud nine after the win and wasted no time in calling out a pair of premier opponents in fellow Brit Amir Khan and Juan Manuel Marquez after the bout, per ESPN Boxing:

The bout was Brook's first defense of his title after ripping the belt away from Shawn Porter in August 2014. In fact, there was fear that this defense would never come, as Brook was the victim of a stabbing attack just weeks after his win over Porter.

The attack resulted in a left-leg wound that required 38 stitches, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, and Brook noted that he was perhaps lucky to be alive:

"

I had been on top of the world in America, winning the world title -- not something many men from England have done -- and now there I was at the bottom of the ocean. To be a world champion had always been a childhood dream. Had I not been found by paramedics, I would have bled to death.

"

Brook got off to a fine start in the bout, tagging Dan early on with several hard shots from the right hand. He appeared to have little trouble crafting an approach against the southpaw Dan, and there was no sign of him favoriting his lead left leg.

By some sort of miracle, Dan survived a disastrous second round. Brook scored two knockdowns in the frame, with the first coming on a vicious right uppercut and the next courtesy of a straight right that Dan had no chance of blocking in his dazed state.

Rafael could hardly keep up with the mayhem:

Dan wobbled his way through the rest of the round, clinching Brook as often as possible just to stay upright on his jellied legs. LiveFight.com played off Dan's name to describe the round:

Brook was perhaps not quite as aggressive as he could have been in the third, but he still managed to feed Dan—now bleeding from the nose—a steady diet of power shots from his right hand. There was no doubt that the Sheffield man was in complete control of the fight, and Dan was fighting on borrowed time as they entered the fourth round.

Paul Malignaggi was perhaps a bit understated in his assessment of Brook's performance up to that point:

The challenger managed to land a couple of good shots to start the fourth, but there was no comeback to be had. With a minute left in the fourth, a rapid-fire combo from Brook knocked Dan down for the third time. Dan came charging back after the mandatory eight-count and nearly stayed upright for the rest of the round, but a left hook as the bell sounded dropped him for a fourth time.

The ref allowed Dan to go to his stool under the pretense of another round, but Dan's corner had seen enough and called the fight.

UCNLive.com's Steve Kim gave his assessment of both fighters after the bout:

While British boxing fans might be salivating over a bout between Khan and Brook, it may not be the best potential next step for the Sheffield man.

This dominant performance quickly dispelled any concerns over Brook's leg, and as one of the few elite, undefeated fighters in the welterweight ranks, he could be in line for a unification fight with the winner of the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao bout.

He told Rafael prior to Saturday that he "would love a unification with the winner." After that dominant display, Brook very well might get exactly what he wished for. Of course, if he takes on Khan before that dream bout, it's likely that few fans would be disappointed with that headliner matchup.
