Chelsea Transfer News: Shock Emmanuel Adebayor Rumours, Petr Cech Latest

Matt JonesMar 28, 2015

Chelsea are weighing up a surprising move for Tottenham Hotspur outcast Emmanuel Adebayor, according to reports.

Writing in the Daily Express, Tony Banks claims that Blues manager Jose Mourinho “wants another experienced emergency stand in” up front, noting his familiarity with the Togolese forward after briefly working with him at Real Madrid. The piece states that the Blues will pay a nominal transfer fee and the player’s £100,000-a-week wages.

Here’s a look at some of the striker’s best moments during his time under Mourinho in the Spanish capital:

Adebayor has fallen out of favour at Tottenham since Mauricio Pochettino took over, and as such, it looks as though the 31-year-old will be on his way out of the club come the end of the season. But it would be remarkable to see him join up with Mourinho at Chelsea.

The aforementioned piece claims that Adebayor will replace Didier Drogba, who is said to be departing at the end of the season. However, the former Ivory Coast striker stated in January that he wants to remain with the Blues, per Sky Sports. Even if he did leave, signing Adebayor wouldn’t be the way to go.

Indeed, with Diego Costa and Loic Remy currently in the squad, Chelsea have enough experience in the forward positions. Instead of signing a striker of questionable temperament who's well past his best, Mourinho should look to give young players from the Blues’ revered academy a chance to make the step up.

Striker Dominic Solanke is one player who’ll feel as though he deserves a crack after some excellent displays for the youth team. As we can see here, the 17-year-old recently picked up the award for England Youth Player of the Year:

Adebayor coming in would only serve to eradicate chances for young players looking to make the grade. As such, Mourinho should abstain from bringing the Tottenham man in. It’d be a major surprise to see the deal materialise and a worrying indication of how little faith the Chelsea boss has in his youth prospects if it does eventually go ahead.

Besiktas Deny Petr Cech Talks

Turkish club Besiktas have claimed that rumours suggesting they have held talks with Czech Republic international Petr Cech are wide of the mark as speculation surrounding the Blues goalkeeper intensifies.

As noted by The Telegraph, a statement on the club’s website read: “The report claiming that we held a meeting with Petr Cech's agent is false." In addition, Matt Law of the same paper claimed that Arsenal and Roma are currently leading the race to sign the goalkeeper, whom Chelsea will apparently let go for a fee of £10 million.

While Chelsea fans will be sad to see the back of Cech, he is far too good a goalkeeper to be sitting on the bench. It’s something they, as supporters, will be acutely aware of. And after all he’s won with the club, you suspect they’d wish him well in his future endeavours:

Cech would walk into the starting XI at the vast majority of European clubs. Not only is he a goalkeeper with an array of exceptional skills, but his attitude to the game, authority in his box and admirable leadership would make him a magnificent signing for any of the aforementioned sides.

He’s just 32 years old too, meaning that there are plenty of years left in the tank. For £10 million, the Chelsea man would represent outstanding business. Though it’ll be a sad day when he does play at Stamford Bridge for the final time, there are few Blues supporters who will begrudge this wonderful stopper the opportunity to take on a new challenge.
