Nonito Donaire vs. William Prado: Winner, Scorecard and Reaction
Nonito Donaire entered Saturday's fight against William Prado in search of redemption after losing his most recent contest, and he certainly achieved it in the form of a second-round knockout.
The Filipino Flash and Prado clashed in front of a partisan crowd at Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines, and Donaire certainly gave his fans something to cheer about.
Donaire captured the vacant NABF Super Bantamweight title and improved to 34-3 in his first fight back since falling to Nicholas Walters in October.
Leading up to the contest, Donaire was well aware of its importance, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael.
"I know exactly what is at stake in this fight," Donaire said. "It's very important when I get into the ring on Saturday night."
According to Spin.ph on Twitter, the crowd was very much in Donaire's corner as expected:
Perhaps Donaire was inspired to be fighting in the Philippines for the first time since 2009 as he came out firing immediately.
Per Ryan Songalia of The Ring, it was apparent from the very start that Prado was in for a rough night:
Things didn't get any better for the Brazilian underdog in the second round as The Filipino Flash continued to pummel him:
With Prado getting absolutely decimated, the official had no choice other than to stop the fight, according to Abac Cordero of The Philippine Star:
Although the fight was stopped early at two minutes and 16 seconds into the second round, Prado had the look of someone who had been hammered for an entire 12-round bout:
After such a convincing win, Songalia believes that the 32-year-old victor could be in line for a fight with undefeated WBC Super Bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz in the near future:
While Donaire's next step will become clearer in the coming months, the fact that he beat Prado so decisively signals that he is ready for some big challenges moving forward.
Many were down on The Filipino Flash following his most recent loss; however, he was able to regroup in a big way, and he is once again the talk of the super bantamweight division.
