NCAA Tournament 2015: Bracket Picks, Live Stream for Saturday's Elite 8 Schedule

Kenny DeJohnMar 28, 2015

If the Sweet 16 proved anything, it's that the Kentucky Wildcats are a juggernaut that can completely demolish the opposition's hopes and dreams.

The West Virginia Mountaineers had aspirations for the Elite Eight that were quickly squashed by the Wildcats. The Mountaineers shot just 24.1 percent from the floor and scored 39 points—with just 18 coming in the first half. Will the Notre Dame Fighting Irish fare better against the NCAA tournament favorites?

Conversely, the Arizona Wildcats barely pulled off a win against the Xavier Musketeers. The Wisconsin Badgers also needed a late rally to lock up a win against the North Carolina Tar Heels, setting up what should be a compelling matchup Saturday in the West Region's finale.

No. 1 Kentucky vs. No. 3 Notre Dame

Notre Dame must put forth maximum effort and play a perfect basketball game Saturday to complete the biggest upset of the 2014-15 season—and one that would certainly go down in history.

While Kentucky trumps the entire field in terms of individual talent, the Irish have a couple of stars of their own. Jerian Grant is a handful to defend anywhere on the court, while Pat Connaughton can shoot lights-out from deep when he gets into a groove.

Even if Grant and Connaughton each go off for 20 points, the Irish will still be at a disadvantage. It's not something a coach can teach, and it's not something a player can learn in practice. Notre Dame simply isn't big enough to contain Kentucky's bigs:

Should both Notre Dame and Kentucky roll with the same starters as they did in the Sweet 16, the height discrepancies will look something like this:

1Andrew Harrison (6'6")Demetrius Jackson (6'1")
2Aaron Harrison (6'6")Jerian Grant (6'5")
3Trey Lyles (6'10")Steve Vasturia (6'5")
4Karl-Anthony Towns (6'11")Pat Connaughton (6'5")
5Willie Cauley-Stein (7'0")Zach Auguste (6'10")

Willie Cauley-Stein and Karl-Anthony Towns are the real threats, as the two big men have been dominant forces in the paint. Each player is a double-double candidate on any given night. Add in each player's capability to block shots in the lane, and Kentucky has the ideal tandem beneath the rim.

The rest of the Wildcats feed off the energy of Cauley-Stein and Towns. While they create havoc inside on defense, the perimeter players know to be ready to scoop up a loose ball or hunt down a rebound.

Offensively, the two command so much attention that shooters Devin Booker, Andrew Harrison and Aaron Harrison generally get wide-open looks from beyond the arc.

Every challenger has fallen to the mighty Wildcats, and head coach Mike Brey knows that the hopes of a nation rest on his shoulders Saturday:

ESPN's Mike Greenberg gives Notre Dame a "puncher's chance," but that's about the best you'll get from analysts and pundits. Kentucky should win with ease.

Prediction: Kentucky, 76-64

No. 1 Wisconsin vs. No. 2 Arizona

If you're looking for a competitive affair on your Saturday evening, then Wisconsin and Arizona are the two teams you need to watch play.

And just so you have an idea about what the betting experts are saying ahead of tipoff, here's ESPN's RJ Bell:

The likelihood of this resulting in a Kentucky-sized blowout is slim to none. Both teams are 34-3, including 16-2 marks within their respective conferences. That said, Arizona does have the clear advantage.

Winning the battle on the boards is generally a surefire way to lock up a win and advance to the next round, especially for Arizona. This is from the team's official website

"The Wildcats rank second in the nation with a plus-9.0 rebound margin and rank first nationally in defensive rebound percentage at 77.5 for the year; Arizona is 126-21 (.857) in Miller’s tenure when it wins the battle on the glass."

Arizona is ranked 45th overall in terms of rebounds per game this season (37.2), compared to the Badgers' ranking of 204th (at 33.7 per game). Frank Kaminsky, probably the best player in the contest, is the game's leading per-game rebounder with eight per contest.

But Wisconsin's prowess on the boards falls off significantly after him. Nigel Hayes hauls in 6.4 per game, and Sam Dekker is good for 5.5 a night. No one else clocks in at over 3.4 (Josh Gasser). When you look at Zona's stat sheet, four players average at least 5.0 per game—Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (6.8), Stanley Johnson (6.6), Kaleb Tarczewski (5.3) and Brandon Ashley (5.2)—with T.J. McConnell representing the next-highest total at 3.9 per night.

Every Badgers player on the court must work to out-rebound his assignment in order to ensure that the team walks away with a victory.

Because Arizona is so proficient on the glass, the chances of that happening are slim to none.

Prediction: Arizona, 67-62
