Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Showtime to Air 4-Part Fight Documentary
Even though the hype machine for Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao on May 2 has already started, Showtime will make sure this megafight gets the proper treatment with an inside documentary series reportedly set to begin April 18.
According to Showtime Sports, Inside Mayweather vs. Pacquiao will be a four-part series that will begin its run April 18 with three episodes airing before the fight and a concluding chapter May 9:
"INSIDE MAYWEATHER vs. PACQUIAO delivers a unique perspective of the compelling and popular Mayweather in the weeks leading up to the biggest prizefight of this generation. In the fourth installment, Epilogue, SHOWTIME Sports focuses the distinct and Sports Emmy Award-winning spotlight on the unpredictable drama of fight week, takes viewers inside the ropes on fight night, and into the mind of the fighter in the aftermath of the bout.
“SHOWTIME has set itself apart with its coverage of the biggest fights in boxing and our viewers have come to expect the unique access we provide,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “INSIDE MAYWEATHER vs. PACQUIAO will not only welcome viewers into Mayweather’s camp before the fight, but also give viewers a window into those dramatic and often poignant moments immediately before and after this historic fight.”
"
The release also notes that Showtime has had numerous cameras filming Mayweather as he trains in Las Vegas for the fight, though the documentary kicked off when Mayweather and Pacquiao had their joint press conference in Los Angeles on March 11.
While a documentary series is nothing new for a major fight, as both Mayweather and Pacquiao have had their lives captured on camera many times before, this will be something that fight fans everywhere will make sure is appointment viewing.
There hasn't been a spectacle in boxing like Mayweather vs. Pacquiao in a long time, possibly ever, because of how big these two stars are and how media coverage has expanded since the days of Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield.
Also adding to the intrigue of this new series is Showtime running an epilogue after the fight. The idea of being able to capture an intimate look at Mayweather, especially with the possibility of losing hanging in the air, is fascinating.
