Australia vs. India: Winners and Losers from Cricket World Cup 2015 Semi-Final

Antoinette MullerMar 26, 2015

India, the defending Cricket World Cup champions, are out of contention. Australia claimed an impressive 95-run victory over them at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday to advance to the final against New Zealand on Sunday.

In contrast to Tuesday’s match between New Zealand and South Africa, this match was not overly competitive, but there were some entertaining moments, and we've picked some winners and losers.

Add your thoughts in the comments.

Winner: Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell’s Reviewing Skills

Ajinkya Rahane fiddled a length ball through to Brad Haddin in the 37th over. There wasn't much reaction, but Australia decided to review and the decision was overturned. At the post-match press conference, Steve Smith said it was him and Glenn Maxwell who prompted the review.

They must have supersonic hearing, because there was no visible deviation and only a slight spike on Snicko. Still, it was good enough to bag Australia a key wicket.

Loser: India’s Bowlers

2 of 5

This might be somewhat harsh, as India’s bowlers managed to pull back the latter part of the innings quite well. But as Australia cruised to 197 for two, it looked like the hosts might be set for a 400-plus target.

India managed to restrict Australia to just 328. Ravichandran Ashwin was tidy as usual, while Umesh Yadav's pace helped him bag four wickets. But overall, India's bowlers were quite disappointing.

This was the first time they had not managed to bowl out the opposition, and they allowed Mitchell Johnson to smack 27 on just nine balls towards the latter part of the innings. For a side who had looked so impressive in the tournament, it was a disappointing end to their campaign.

Winner: The World Cup Final

3 of 5

The World Cup final will be played between the two host nations. The last time the two teams met, it was a low-scoring thriller. While that feat is unlikely to be repeated, the final matchup should be competitive.

New Zealand are constantly improving, and while their batting has not been overly consistent, the tracks in Australia should help them get their eye in a bit more.

Sure, India against New Zealand would have been a tasty prospect, too, but there’s just something about the two co-hosts squaring off that adds a special dimension to the final.

Loser: Virat Kohli

4 of 5

Picking on individuals is not the aim of these reviews, but poor Virat Kohli had a horrible time on the field. He scored a painstaking one off 13 balls and dropped a catch in the latter part of the Australian innings.

That’s just sport, though, and these things happen. Kohli remains one of the best players in the world, he just had a bad day at the office.

Winner: Steve Smith

In contrast to Virat Kohli, Steve Smith continued his stellar run of form. He scored 105 off 93 balls and was involved in a run out and an important review. He is looking more and more like a future Australian captain.
