5 Uncapped USA Players to Watch Out for in 2015

Joe TanseyMar 25, 2015

As the United States men's national team schedule heats up this week in preparation for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, it is worth wondering if there are potential contributors out there who haven't received a call-up yet.

Since the Yanks departed Brazil last summer, manager Jurgen Klinsmann has not been afraid to test out new talent.

At least a dozen players have donned the USMNT shirt for the first time over the last six months, which is a great sign for those still searching for their first appearance.

Here's a look at five uncapped players whom you should keep an eye out for through the rest of 2015.

Harry Shipp

1 of 5

If his current form holds, Harry Shipp will be in a USMNT jersey before the calendar flips over to 2016.

The Chicago Fire playmaker had a strong rookie season in 2014, and he has started the first three games of the Major League Soccer season in style.

Unfortunately for Shipp, he plays on one of, if not, the worst teams in MLS, which might deflect outside attention away from his progression.

The crafty winger has a bright future in front of him, and the Gold Cup could be a target for the 23-year-old if he stars throughout the first half of the MLS season.

Even if he fails to make a mark on the Yanks before the summer ends, Shipp should be a name that remains in the conversation as long as other wingers in the talent pool struggle with consistency at the international level.

Khiry Shelton

Khiry Shelton's rise from the collegiate level to the USMNT could be faster than most expected.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft has provided a spark off the bench for New York City FC early in the MLS season, which helped him earn a spot in the under-23 camp.

At just 21, the 6'3" Shelton could be one of the top players at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro if the Yanks qualify for the tournament this time around.

As long as he earns playing time from NYCFC boss Jason Kreis, whether it be as a starter or a reserve, Shelton will have a chance to catch the eye of Klinsmann.

There is an outside chance that the powerful, speedy forward makes the Gold Cup roster. In order to do that, Shelton may have to score a large amount of goals during the first half of the MLS campaign.

Even if he doesn't receive an immediate call-up for his exploits at NYCFC, Shelton could be called upon after the Gold Cup in order to receive some experience before the Olympic qualifying tournament.

Cameron Carter-Vickers

3 of 5

By the time he develops into a true footballer in a few years, Cameron Carter-Vickers very well could be a bigger success story at Tottenham Hotspur than DeAndre Yedlin.

The 17-year-old center-back, who recently marked Radamel Falcao in an under-21 match, is thriving in roles at higher age levels.

Carter-Vickers was a part of the Tottenham team that advanced all the way to the semifinals of the FA Youth Cup before they were knocked out by Chelsea midway through March.

At the international level, the young defender earned plenty of good reviews for his play at the back during the under-20 World Cup qualifying tournament in January.

It's not crazy to think Klinsmann would give Carter-Vickers a shot with the senior team at some point in 2015, but the defender's main focus at the moment is the under-20 World Cup in New Zealand this summer.

Will Packwood

4 of 5

Will Packwood's name has drifted in and out of the USMNT conversation over the last few years due to a terrible injury and lack of playing time at Birmingham City.

The 21-year-old, who was called up for the Ukraine match in March 2014 but did not play, is currently on loan at Cheltenham Town

Because of his experience in England, Packwood is expected to be one of the anchors of the under-23 defense during Olympic qualifying.

There is the potential for the Massachussets native to partner Carter-Vickers in the middle of defense for most of the qualification process in October.

If Packwood impresses during the rest of the English season, and at the lower international level, he could become a real contender for a starting center-back position with the senior squad.

Tommy Thompson

5 of 5

In August and September 2014, Tommy Thompson gave USMNT fans a glimpse into what the future may hold at the No. 10 position.

The 19-year-old San Jose Earthquakes player displayed plenty of skill in tight spaces in the final few months of last year's MLS campaign. But he hasn't seen the field yet in three games in 2015.

One has to think that will change eventually, especially if Thompson impresses during his time in the under-20 camp.

Just like others on this list, Thompson is seen immediately as a contributor at the lower levels of the international game. But if he can star for the under-20 and under-23 teams this year, a call-up to the senior team is likely in his future.

The 2016 January camp for MLS players would be the most realistic time for Thompson to make his debut based on the important tournaments at the younger levels. But it would not be a total surprise if he earned some playing time later in the year after the Gold Cup.
