J.D. Gibbs Beginning Treatment for Symptoms Impacting Brain Function
J.D. Gibbs, who serves as the president of Joe Gibbs Racing and co-owns the team with his father, has begun treatment to address speech and processing issues.ย ย ย
The team posted a news release to its official website on March 25 to announce that Gibbs, 46, was receiving attention due to the symptoms he showed that impacted his brain function.ย ย ย ย ย
NASCAR CEO Brian France spoke about the situation involving Gibbs, perย The Daytona Beach News-Journal:
On March 29, Joe Gibbs spoke on his son's health, courtesy of Mike Hembree for USAToday.com:
""J.D. through his entire life has probably been the most courageous person I've ever been around or known."
[...]
"The good thing is that J.D. and I share the same responsibilities," said Joe Gibbs, who did not take questions Sunday. "If I'm not there for a particular reason, J.D. will be there. If he's not there for a particular reason, I'll be there. As he goes through treatment, he'll probably do less at the race track because he has a full week that demands quite a bit from him."
Gibbs said doctors have provided "very few answers" about his son's medical condition.
"We've been dealing with this for about six months," he said. "Basically, what the doctors said is that they just really don't know. J.D. has lived a very active lifestyle in all the things he's done. Physically, he's loved all sporting events, everything from football to snowboarding and racing cars to racing motorbikes.
"We can't point to any one serious thing (injury) that happened to him, but certainly an injury possibly led him into some of the symptoms he's experiencing now."
"
Gibbs has been president of Joe Gibbs Racing since October 1997, and the team has won three Sprint Cup Series drivers championships in that span, along with an Xfinity Series title in 2009.
As mentioned in the release, Gibbs has led an active, athletic lifestyle. This included playing football in college at The College of William & Mary, perย TrueSpeedCommunication.com, where Gibbs played both quarterback and defensive back from 1987-1990.
It's unclear which specific head injuries, if any, have played a role in Gibbs' current medical situation, though that is what doctors are speculating, according to the official release.
