Should Tuchel Stay or Go? 🤔

Mesut Ozil Hits Back at Paul Scholes, Targets Cristiano Ronaldo's Ballon D'Or

James DudkoMar 25, 2015

Mesut Ozil wants to "get his hands on the Ballon d'Or" and believes Paul Scholes' criticism is intended to "polarise" perceptions of his performances. The controversial Arsenal and Germany star hit out at his critics and set a lofty career ambition during an interview with Sport Bild (h/t ESPN FC's Stephan Uersfeld).

Ozil turned the tables on Scholes after the ex-Manchester United midfielder chided his performances and attitude in both print and on screen"He wants to polarise as a pundit on TV. But in the end, such statements only give me an extra push," said the Arsenal man.

Since moving into punditry, Scholes has been merciless in his criticism of Ozil.

Ozil hopes that extra push will help him earn the highest individual recognition the game can offer: "Should I continue to improve myself and stay healthy, I want to get my hands on the Ballon d'Or in the upcoming years."

Often criticised since Arsenal made him their club-record signing in the summer of 2013, Ozil has actually been in solid form since returning from injury in January. He's noticeably bulkier and has been putting in more yards on the pitch.

The 26-year-old hasn't lost his natural flair, creative instincts and technical artistry. But his recent worthy showings have been undermined by news he was partying in Berlin just hours after missing the Gunners' 2-1 win over Newcastle United with a supposed illness, per Bild (h/t Metro's Lewis Rudd).

Germany boss Joachim Low acknowledged Arsenal had granted Ozil leave for the trip to Berlin, per another report from Uersfeld. But the player's dubious timing is sure to generate yet more controversy in what's been a checkered stay in north London.

If he really is gunning for the Ballon d'Or, Ozil must consistently show maximum commitment to deliver his best form week in and week out. If he does, he certainly has the talent to vie for the award and keep Scholes quiet.
