J.J. Watt, Texans Agree to New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Mike ChiariMar 24, 2015

The Houston Texans appear to be a team on the verge of playoff contention, and defensive lineman J.J. Watt may have accelerated the process Tuesday by agreeing to a restructured contract.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year saved the Texans $8 million against the salary cap by converting his roster bonus into a signing bonus:

Joel Corry of CBS Sports broke down the financial details of the new deal:

This move certainly gives Houston more flexibility and a greater opportunity to surround Watt with quality pieces.

Watt dominated to the tune of 20.5 sacks last season, which put him in company all by himself when factoring in his 20.5 sacks from 2012 as well, per NFL Network:

The former University of Wisconsin standout also forced four fumbles, recovered five fumbles and scored five total touchdowns between defense and offense.

There is little doubt that the 26-year-old star is the most dominant defensive force in football, and his presence alone gives the Texans a chance to be competitive.

If the front office is able to take the cap space saved and use it to improve the team in other areas, then the Texans will undoubtedly be a team to watch in the AFC in 2015 and beyond.
