NCAA Wrestling Championship 2015: Final Team Standings, Top Stories from Event

This year's NCAA wrestling championships were all about history being made, namely for one program in particular, as Ohio State stole the show.

For starters, the Buckeyes won their first national championship in wrestling, a huge moment for the program, as Ohio State wrestling tweeted:

Via NCAA.com, the top-10 standings in the team competition were as follows:

  1. Ohio State, 102.0 points
  2. Iowa, 84.0 points
  3. Edinboro, 75.5 points
  4. Missouri, 73.5 points
  5. Cornell, 71.5 points
  6. Penn State, 67.5 points
  7. Oklahoma State, 65.0 points
  8. Minnesota,59.5 points
  9. Nebraska, 59.0 points
  10. Virginia Tech, 56.0 points

Of course, the story of the entire tournament was Ohio State wrestler Logan Stieber. His fourth straight national championship put him in rarefied air, per ESPN Stats & Information:

Oklahoma State’s Pat Smith, Iowa State’s Cael Sanderson and Cornell’s Kyle Dake are the only other wrestlers in history to win four NCAA titles.

Stieber will certainly be missed at Ohio State, as Buckeyes head coach Tom Ryan told Roger Moore of NCAA.com:

"

Logan has been a pillar in the program, the growth of the program. People want to be around him, so we’re going to miss him. I asked him if he wanted to stay a few more years. Being in a position to win two, three national titles takes a special, disciplined student-athlete. Obviously to win four is extraordinary. Logan is extraordinary; he’s been that way since he stepped on our campus.

"

Stieber's achievement was the highlight of the tournament, though he wasn't the only Buckeye to win a national championship, as freshman Nathan Tomasello took the crown at 125 pounds.

Kyven Gadson of Iowa State finished with a flourish, pinning Ohio State's Kyle Snyder in the 197-pound final. Oklahoma State junior Alex Dieringer, meanwhile, won his second straight national championship, and North Carolina State junior Nick Gwiazdowski also accomplished the feat.

Then there was Illinois freshman Isaiah Martinez, who finished his debut campaign by going undefeated, a rare feat for a freshman in the sport. Perhaps he has dreams of being the next Stieber.

But one of the coolest stories of the tournament didn't play out with a championship on the line. Rather, it was decided in the third-place match in the 174-pound weight class between Robert Kokesh of Nebraska and Logan Storley of Minnesota. Kokesh beat Storley in overtime, 6-4, but their story stretches back far beyond just one match.

According to the Argus Leader, the pair first wrestled against one another in elementary school, when Kokesh was in the third grade and Storley was in the second. The South Dakotans would meet many times after that, both as adolescents and in college, and their rivalry was bolstered by the friendship they had developed over the years.

This year's third-place match was the last time the pair will ever face off against one another, at least in a sanctioned competition. One would imagine they'll find a way to carve out some time for some friendly competitions somewhere down the line.
