Michigan State Upsets Virginia, 60-54

CHARLOTTE, NC - MARCH 22: Denzel Valentine #45 of the Michigan State Spartans reacts after defeating the Michigan State Spartans 60-54 during the third round of the 2015 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena on March 22, 2015 in Cha

In March, few things are predictable. But one thing seems to be true each and every year—come the NCAA tournament, Tom Izzo's Michigan State team is sure to be playing its best basketball.

That has proved to be true again this year, as the No. 7 Spartans upset No. 2 Virginia, the second major upset in the East Region in two days after No. 8 NC State knocked No. 1 Villanova out of the tournament Saturday night.

Led by Travis Trice (23 points, 4-of-8 from beyond the arc) and a stifling defense that held Virginia to 29.8 percent shooting from the field, the Spartans trailed for all of 18 seconds and never relinquished the lead they took just one minute and 47 seconds into the game.

As J.A. Adande of ESPN noted, Michigan State beat Virginia at its own game:

Branden Dawson chipped in 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Anthony Gill (11 points, six rebounds) and Darion Atkins (10 points, 14 points, two blocks) led the Cavaliers, while Justin Anderson—who missed a chunk of time at the end of the season—struggled in this one, shooting just 2-of-7 from the field and finishing with eight points.

It's the second year in a row the Spartans have knocked the Cavaliers out of the tournament, last year taking care of them in the Sweet 16. It's pretty rare that teams pull off the feat Michigan State just did, per ESPN Stats & Information:

For Michigan State, meanwhile, the East Region appears to be open for the taking. The Spartans await the winner of No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 11 Dayton, and it's not hard to think Sparty could make a run. Izzo certainly thinks they have a shot to do just that.

"I'm so proud of (Branden) Dawson and (Travis) Trice and the job they did, and happy four our fans,'' Izzo said on the Spartan Sports Network after the game, per Mike Griffith of MLive.com. "I'm excited for us, (and) I think we have a chance to make a little run.''

At this point, nobody is going to doubt him.

Duke Dominates San Diego State in 68-49 Win

CHARLOTTE, NC - MARCH 22: Head coach Mike Krzyzewski of the Duke Blue Devils hugs Quinn Cook #2 after he comes out of the game against the San Diego State Aztecs during the third round of the 2015 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Time Warner Cable Are

Entering Sunday, the San Diego State Aztecs owned one of the best defenses in the country. They ranked second in points allowed (53.5 PPG).

That great defense was nowhere to be seen against the Duke Blue Devils, who shot 54.5 percent from the field, including 6-of-14, in a one-sided 68-49 victory. It was the fourth-highest point total allowed by SDSU this season.

The Aztecs had no answer inside for Jahlil Okafor, who scored 26 points and grabbed six rebounds. The freshman big man was allowed so much freedom that he began attacking San Diego State on isolation plays from the perimeter:

Justise Winslow was also big in the win. ESPN Stats & Info highlighted how impressive his stat line was:

ESPN's Seth Greenberg added that Winslow's transition to power forward has made the Duke offense even better:

The Blue Devils will play the Utah Utes in the Sweet 16. The game will be a homecoming for Winslow, who graduated from St. John's School in Houston, Texas.

Wichita State Earns Bragging Rights in State of Kansas

OMAHA, NE - MARCH 22: Fred VanVleet #23 of the Wichita State Shockers celebrates as the second half ends against the Kansas Jayhawks during the third round of the 2015 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at the CenturyLink Center on March 22, 2015 in Omaha,

For years, the Kansas Jayhawks have avoided the Wichita State Shockers like the plague. The Jayhawks and their fans argued that KU would have nothing to gain from a matchup between the two teams. Wichita State's ascendancy has only entrenched Kansas even more so in its position.

After Sunday, the Shockers might not be running into the Jayhawks for some time. Gregg Marshall's team dumped out the No. 2 seed in a 78-65 victory.

ESPN.com's Jake Trotter quipped that the shoe might be on the other foot from now on:

All five Shockers starters scored in double figures, with Tekele Cotton the team's leading scorer at 19 points. Fred VanVleet also finished with 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals in what was a great all-around performance.

As a team, Wichita State shot an impressive 49 percent from the field. The Shockers' inside-out strategy worked to perfection:

Meanwhile, Kansas never got into an offensive groove and missed 37 of its 57 field-goal attempts in addition to going 6-of-21 from three-point range.

ESPN's Andy Katz praised the continued work of Marshall. Mark Turgeon really got the program going, but Marshall has taken it to improbable heights:

The big question will now be whether he and the Shockers can match their trip to the Final Four in 2013.

Wichita State plays the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the next round, which FiveThirtyEight's Nate Silver believes will be a very close game:

Oklahoma Denies Dayton Second Consecutive Trip to Sweet 16

COLUMBUS, OH - MARCH 22: Buddy Hield #24 and Frank Booker #1 of the Oklahoma Sooners celebrate their 72 to 66 win over the Dayton Flyers during the third round of the 2015 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Nationwide Arena on March 22, 2015 in Columbus

The Oklahoma Sooners slowly but surely ground down the Dayton Flyers Sunday, holding them without a field goal for over nine minutes in the second half en route to a 72-66 victory.

Both teams got off to a hot start from the field as they combined to go 14-of-25 from behind the arc, per ESPN Stats & Info:

Early on in the second half, it looked like Dayton's NCAA tournament magic would continue as Oklahoma transferred a sloppy finish to the first half over into the second frame.

However, the Sooners continued plugging away, and the Flyers then found themselves unable to knock down a single shot. Once Oklahoma took a 57-56 lead, it didn't look back. An impressive block from Buddy Hield prevented Dayton from cutting the deficit to two points late, and that was the final nail in the coffin for the Flyers:

Hield and Jordan Woodard were the standout performers for OU. They weren't exactly efficient, shooting a combined 7-of-22, but they scored 15 and 16 points, respectively.

Gonzaga Cruises in Win over Iowa

SEATTLE, WA - MARCH 22: Domantas Sabonis #11 of the Gonzaga Bulldogs celebrates with Angel Nunez #2 against the Iowa Hawkeyes in the second half of the game during the third round of the 2015 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at KeyArena on March 22, 2015

When Kyle Wiltjer is rolling, the Gonzaga Bulldogs are a tough team to beat. When Wiltjer misses just two shots and scores 24 points, the Zags are nearly impossible to beat.

The junior forward was excellent Sunday. His 24 points and seven rebounds came in just 25 minutes on the floor—that's some impressive efficiency. The rest of the team took note, shooting 61.5 percent from the field.

Yahoo Sports' Jeff Eisenberg feels that Wiltjer's singular presence could be what separates this Gonzaga team from others that have fallen short of expectations in March:

After the game, Wiltjer also provided one of the best videos of the tournament:

Domantas Sabonis also had a big say in the final result, coming off the bench to score 18 points and grab nine rebounds.

As good as the Bulldogs have been in the regular season under head coach Mark Few, he's never taken them beyond the Sweet 16. He currently has one of his best teams ever, so it would be a serious disappointment if the Zags fail to reach the Elite Eight.

Wisconsin Grinds out 72-65 Victory

The Wisconsin Badgers had to work for it, but they eventually sealed passage to the Sweet 16 with a 72-65 win over the Oregon Ducks.

Although Oregon was playing from behind for much of the game, it was always within striking distance of Wisconsin and even managed to tie the game at 52-52 with a little under six minutes left in the game. The Badgers then went on a 10-2 run that put the Ducks away for good.

Oregon star Joseph Young left it all on the court, scoring 30 points in a losing effort. His 12 field goals accounted for nearly half of his team's total. The Pac-12 Player of the Year did as much as he could, but it wasn't enough to overcome Wisconsin's balanced attack.

After the game, Young shared an emotional embrace with his family, per Matt Tait of the Lawrence Journal-World:

Sports Illustrated's Seth Davis believes Young will make his return to a basketball court soon:

Maryland's Luck Finally Runs out

One of the bigger questions surrounding the Maryland Terrapins was whether the college basketball gods would continue to smile down upon them. According to KenPom.com, the Terps are the second-luckiest team in the country, and a team's good luck tends to run out in the NCAA tournament.

Sure enough, the West Virginia Mountaineers sent Maryland home Sunday with a 69-59 win. Four different Mountaineers players scored in double figures, which was big since the bench contributed just nine points as a whole.

The Terps' late comeback bid hit a major snag after Melo Trimble suffered a head injury that ruled him out for the last few minutes of the game. Before exiting, he scored 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting and was a big reason Maryland remained in the game.

Without the services of Trimble, there was no way the Terrapins would be able to make up the deficit.

Louisville Defense on Show in Win over Northern Iowa

The Northern Iowa Panthers have had one of the better offenses in the country this year, one that ranked 16th in field-goal percentage.

That efficient unit was nowhere to be found as the Louisville Cardinals held UNI to 39.1-percent shooting, including a 31.9-percent clip from long range.

Seth Tuttle scored 14 points, but Louisville shut off his supporting cast. The rest of the Panthers' starting five combined to score 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

Meanwhile, Louisville's offense was firing on all cylinders. Terry Rozier led the way with 25 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Wayne Blackshear was also big in the victory, scoring 10 points and grabbing six boards.

Blackshear's block late in the second half was the play of the game.

The Cardinals are one of those teams whose seed belies its true talent. Rick Pitino's team will be a serious threat in the East region, especially with Villanova and Virgina out of the way.
