Moves AC Milan Should Make in the Summer Transfer Window

Anthony LopopoloMar 22, 2015

AC Milan have a lot of decisions to make over the next few months.

The first one relates to coach Filippo Inzaghi. He seems to have barely escaped a mid-season sacking, and he has said himself that the club will decide his future at the end of the season, per Sky Sport Italia (h/t Football Italia).

But that is not Milan's only problem. They have several players at the end of their contracts and others on loan who may not make the cut.

There is also the small matter of a potential changing of ownership. La Repubblica reports that Thai businessman Bee Taechaubol could purchase around 25 per cent of the club (h/t Football Italia).

Lots could happen. Let's take a look at what they should and shouldn't do, starting with the most important.

Re-Sign Nigel de Jong

The one player who has not disappointed Milan in recent years is Nigel de Jong.

He is a force in midfield, always tracking the play. Even though he can be a little testy—De Jong has received nine yellow cards this season—the 30-year-old often snuffs out attacks and gives his defence a hand.

Per WhoScored.com, De Jong has made an average of 3.8 interceptions per match. That is the second-best ratio in the league among players with at least 13 appearances in Serie A this season.

His contract with the Rossoneri expires in the summer, and a move to Manchester United is expected. "I'm currently a Milan player, but we'll have to see for next season," he recently told AC Milan's official website (h/t ESPN FC).

Milan have to do everything they can to keep him—or else they will lose the only midfield engine they have.

Dump Aging Players

Milan have 11 players whose contracts end in the summer.

Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien, Daniele Bonera, Philippe Mexes, Giampaolo Pazzini and Christian Abbiati all have to go. They are all 30 years old and over, and they should not have any place in future plans.

Muntari, Mexes, Bonera and Essien are the biggest problems, considering they have collected four red cards between them this season.

Pazzini has hardly started this season, and he has not taken the few chances that have come his way. And Abbiati has lost his position in goal to Diego Lopez.

Milan must clean house before they make new signings.

Sign Mattia Destro or Ciro Immobile

Mattia Destro's loan spell concludes in the summer, and Milan have the option of buying him from Roma on a permanent transfer for €16 million, per Rossoneri Blog.

Destro has scored just twice in seven appearances for Milan thus far.

If the Rossoneri are not satisfied with his performances at the tail end of this season, they could send him back and look for a striker elsewhere.

That man could be Ciro Immobile, who has failed to truly emerge as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski at Borussia Dortmund.

Sky has reported that Immobile wants to return to Italy and that Milan have already made contact with his representatives (h/t Football Italia). Immobile has scored 10 goals in 26 appearances for the German club.

Either way, Milan need a pure centre-forward, and they have to sign one this summer.
