NASCAR Xfinity Series at California 2015 Results: Winner, Standings and Reaction

Chris RolingMar 21, 2015

If there was any doubt Kevin Harvick is the hottest driver in the NASCAR field right now, his seizing the checkered flag Saturday at the NASCAR Xfinity Series Drive4Clots.com 300 at Auto Club Speedway erased every shred.

Fresh off a Sprint Cup Series at Phoenix triumph, Harvick dominated the two-mile track, leading by a full two seconds at the halfway point before going on to lead 100 of 150 laps.

NASCAR XFINITY captured the moment:

It's another case of a Sprint Cup Series driver crushing the field, although young guns made Saturday's event interesting. Brendan Gaughan and Erik Jones came closest to threatening Harvick late, finishing second and third, respectively.

Here is how the top 10 drivers finished the Drive4Clots.com 300, with a full listing of results available at NASCAR.com:

As the races before it, Saturday's event at Auto Club Speedway featured a wealth of young guns who were attempting to keep pace with more experienced drivers while also combating one another in the standings.

Veteran Denny Hamlin, owner of two top-five finishes in the Sprint Cup and one in the Xfinity Series this year, jumped out to an early advantage and led 21 of the first 24 laps.

The Joe Gibbs Racing star wound up hanging around and finishing 18th while leading 33 laps.

In time, Hamlin gave way to Harvick, who took the torch and led most of the way after. Considering he came a close second to Kyle Larson in the same event last season, Harvick appeared to have an extra bit of motivation Saturday despite struggling with the tricky course just like everyone else did, according to ESPN's Bob Pockrass:

Speaking of Larson, the Chip Ganassi Racing star hung around the top 10 most of the day but never sniffed the lead.

Austin Dillon joined Larson in the disappointment line after Saturday's checkered flag. After a fourth-place finish in Phoenix seemed to put him back in the strong form equaling his same finish at Daytona back in February, a car malfunction knocked him from the race.

Motor Racing Network expanded on the situation, which hurt Dillon in the momentum department:

As for the standings, Ty Dillon entered the leader and stayed put after a 14th-place finish. Chris Buescher entered the day second and used a stellar fifth-place performance to also stand pat in the standings.

Of interest was also one Darrell Wallace Jr., who entered the day tied for fourth in the standings with Chase Elliott. He was in contention for most of the day until late, at one point even swiping the lead from Harvick and leading all drivers for three laps.

Elliott, who rested just 25 points back of archrival Ty Dillon entering the day, made a major push late by gaining four spots in just one lap. The outburst came after a strategic stop for fresh tires, as Pockrass noted before Elliott's upward climb:

Elliott proved to once again be a notable mover on the weekend, gaining one spot in the standings as a result.

The other driver mentioned above, Brad Keselowski, of course benefited from the move as well, as the final order shows.

Still, Saturday's relatively clean event with just a handful of cautions was all about Harvick, who will start second Sunday at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at California.

It's one thing to get a lead, but another to defend it in such a smooth manner as Harvick did Saturday. As Chris Knight of CatchFence.com illustrates, the news that the field was gaining ground late in the race was met with more aggression from the eventual winner:

As JR Motorsports records, though, Harvick was quick to make it about the team, not the individual:

Next up for Harvick and the rest of the series is NASCAR Xfinity Series at Texas, which takes place at Texas Motor Speedway, where Elliott took home the top prize last year.

For Elliott and the other young drivers involved, it's another chance to take on Sprint Cup regulars and jockey for positioning in the standings.

In the meantime, Harvick will look to make history by sweeping both events in California.
