NCAA Tournament Schedule 2015: Live Stream, TV Coverage for Sunday's Games

Chris RolingMar 21, 2015

Sunday, the checkered flag in the 2015 NCAA men's basketball tournament enters sight for the favorites, underdogs and Cinderellas still alive.

The madness took a brief break Friday, but the opening weekend of the tournament always seems to birth memorable upsets and create new household names.

This year won't be any different. In fact, a somewhat predictable second round means more competitive play than usual as top teams collide with other top teams.

Breaking Down Sunday's Top Matchups

No. 8 Oregon vs. No. 1 Wisconsin

One of the tournament's hottest sleeper picks, the Oregon Ducks are through to the third round after surviving ninth-seeded Oklahoma State, 79-73.

There wasn't much defense in the affair, as the Ducks shot 54.7 percent from the floor and got a game-high 27 points from Joseph Young.

Don't expect much defense in the Oregon-Wisconsin showdown, either.

Oregon has done its best football impersonation this year, lighting up the scoreboard at each opportunity. The Ducks rank 15th in adjusted offensive efficiency at KenPom.com.

Now for the fun part—Wisconsin ranks No. 1 in the same metric.

Of course, the biggest reason is Frank Kaminsky, one of the top player-of-the-year candidates. In an easy 86-72 win against Coastal Carolina, the senior piled on 27 points and 12 rebounds while flanked by 20 points from Sam Dekker and 15 from Nigel Hayes.

The difference on the floor Sunday, other than Kaminsky, will be defense. Wisconsin can clamp down and prevent prolonged outbursts by the Ducks attack, while the opposite isn't true.

Prediction: Wisconsin 73, Oregon 65

No. 5 West Virginia vs. No. 4 Maryland

The fight for the right to advance and face the Kentucky Wildcats will at least entertain.

Head coach Bob Huggins' West Virginia Mountaineers, ranked 24th in ESPN's RPI rankings, average 73.9 points per game and just survived an upset-minded Buffalo team.

Head coach Mark Turgeon's team is more erratic at 69.5 points per game, but the Maryland Terrapins do rank 12th in the RPI and seem to be hitting their stride at just the right time after a three-point dismissal of Valparaiso.

What should worry West Virginia, other than needing a late conversion from deep to overcome a 12th seed, is just how deep Maryland is at this point. In the Terrapins' win against the Crusaders, Jake Layman—the team's third-leading scorer at 12.6 points per game—scored just four points.

Instead, Dez Wells poured in 14, Jared Nickens exploded for 14 off the bench and freshman guard Melo Trimble had his all-grown-up moment with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Even former Valparaiso head coach Homer Drew couldn't help but sing Trimble's praises during the game, per Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel:

Based on momentum and depth, the Terrapins hold an advantage against the Mountaineers.

So long as the shots continue to fall, it'll be Maryland tasked with taking down undefeated Kentucky.

Prediction: Maryland 74, West Virginia 73

No. 5 Northern Iowa vs. No. 4 Louisville

Louisville is lucky to be here right now. A controversial last play against the UC Irvine Anteaters helped the Cardinals survive in two-point fashion.

For Northern Iowa, not so much.

The Panthers, a quiet No. 15 in the RPI, laughed Wyoming out of the building, winning by a score of 71-54 behind 50 percent shooting from deep and a team-high 16 points from Paul Jesperson off the bench.

As far as depth conversations go, few can hold the proverbial candle to the Panthers, as ESPN Stats & Info points out:

Northern Iowa head coach Ben Jacobson cites his team's identity as the reason for the blowout.

"It's the personality of this team. They have taken ownership of being who they are," Jacobson said, per The Associated Press (via ESPN.com). "And being relaxedbeing looseis a big part of who they are. They have combined that with being really tough and really competitive."

Louisville1046
Northern Iowa1319

None of this is to suggest the Cardinals don't stand a chance, but a last-second win against a No. 13 seed isn't a good signnor are just eight points from Montrezl Harrell in 38 minutes.

As the adjusted efficiency numbers at KenPom.com show, Louisville hinges on strong defense to win contests. It worked against the Anteaters, but a well-rounded, confident team such as the Panthers are a different sort of opponent.

Prediction: Northern Iowa 68, Louisville 66
