Upset to Watch

No. 14 Georgia State over No. 6 Xavier

Alright, you're probably going to watch them all, but if you have to catch just one, make it Georgia State vs. Xavier. It's time to believe.

Star guard R.J. Hunter catapulted himself, his father—Georgia State head coach Ron Hunter—and his Panthers' teammates into legendary status with his game-winning three-pointer against Baylor on Thursday.

It was a thrilling capper to a late 13-0 run, one that should have this team floating into its game against Xavier on cloud nine. While some might think this team is a one-shot wonder, there is plenty reason to believe the Panthers can beat out the Musketeers on Saturday.

Georgia State trailed Baylor for all but a couple of minutes Thursday but hardly looked like a team that would need a miracle for much of that time. The Panthers, lead by steady first-half efforts from Ryann Green and Markus Crider, were down just three points at the halftime in that contest.

This was quite a feat considering Hunter—the team's leading scorer—was nowhere to be found on offense, with just two points in the first 20 minutes of play. His performance should be much improved after that confidence-booster of a shot Thursday.

The Panthers' competitiveness in that game was made doubly impressive by the fact that Ryan Harrow—second on the team with 18.7 points per game that season—sat out the contest with a hamstring injury. Coach Hunter noted that Harrow may see some time Saturday against Xavier, per Doug Roberson of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

"

We’re just in a situation right now where we’re in a pretty good groove. I don’t want to play him at 70 or 80 percent. I know as a senior this is a tough thing. He moved actually fairly well today in practice. If he does play, it’ll be one of those things where I would bring him off the bench in a special situation, but right now we’re playing about seven guys that are really in kind of a groove right there. But if we need him — he didn’t even dress yesterday, but he will dress for this game here.

"

Harrow could prove to be an inspiration, but Hunter may not want to give him too many minutes regardless of his health. Green stepped up in a big way with 11 points against Baylor, including 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

Xavier will likely counter the scrappy Panthers with heavy doses of Matt Stainbrook, whose deceptively solid post game and unassuming appearance reminds one of a father bullying his kid in one-on-one in the driveway.

CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein commented on his play against Ole Miss:

Stainbrook's size, along with that of Jalen Reynolds, Trevon Bluiett and James Farr, should prove difficult for the Panthers to handle. Reynolds, only a freshman, was 2-of-12 shooting from the floor against the Rebels; improved play on offense from him could spell trouble for Georgia State. Farr will be key to limiting Georgia State's second-chance opportunities as he snagged 13 boards against Ole Miss.

The best bet for Georgia State to avoid taking too much punishment inside may be to jam the passing lanes and put pressure on Xavier's backcourt so that Xavier struggles to get into offensive sets.

Baylor coughed up the ball a staggering 21 times Thursday against Georgia State. Of course, ESPN Stats & Info pointed out just how wild that figure was:

That may make it seem like it's an anomaly, but the Panthers rank sixth in the nation with 9.1 steals per game.

The Musketeers gave up 10 turnovers to Ole Miss on Thursday and wilted under the suffocating pressure from Villanova in their 17-point loss in the Big East title game.

Look for Hunter and the defensively minded Kevin Ware (1.7 steals per game) to be key to the team's success on the defensive end. If the Musketeers get into an offensive rhythm, this game could be tough for the Panthers.

Xavier ranks ninth in the nation in assists per game, with the likes of Dee Davis (6.1 assists per game) and Remy Abell whipping the ball around the perimeter, and the big men doing a fine job of drawing in defenders before kicking it outside for the spot-up shooters.

Xavier is a quality opponent coming out of the Big East, but this Georgia State team just has that special feeling, and a No. 14 seed may have actually been far too low. Look for the Panthers to take all the goodwill, momentum and confidence they built up from that Baylor game and use it as fuel for a gritty upset win over Xavier.

Prediction: Georgia State defeats Xavier 63-60
