Daryl Gross Resigns as Syracuse Athletic Director: Latest Details and Reaction

Timothy RappMar 18, 2015

Syracuse will be making a change atop the athletic department, as athletic director Daryl Gross has stepped down from the position.

David Tobin, Chris Carlson and John O'Brien of Syracuse.com have the report:

"

Gross will remain in a position with the university, a source with direct knowledge said. An announcement is expected this morning, multiple sources said. Athletic employees are expected to participate in meetings regarding the move during the morning.

It will end more than a decade that Syracuse has spent with Gross at the helm of SU athletics. Gross oversaw the school's transition into the big business era of college sports and ACC, along with nearly 10 years of breaking NCAA rules within its athletic programs.

Jesse Dougherty of Dailyorange.com passed along Gross' statement:

As Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports noted, the move doesn't come as much of a surprise:

The move comes in the wake of the harsh sanctions handed down to the school as a result of an NCAA investigation into the program, which ultimately led to the vacating of 108 of Jim Boeheim's coaching victories and the loss of 12 scholarships over four years, among other sanctions.

Syracuse also self-imposed a postseason ban for the basketball program this year, in addition to other punishments. It seems reasonable to assume the recent NCAA investigations played a part in Gross stepping down.

It's been a tough month for the Orange, but perhaps a change at the top of the athletic program will help the school move on and get a fresh start in the aftermath of the recent scandal.
