Region to Watch: East
Every year, there is one region that just looks like hysteria is about to take place. The East is the clear-cut winner of that category this March.
First of all, Villanova is a deserving No. 1 seed. However, the Wildcats have torn apart every Big East opponent this season during their 15-game win streak. With just two current programs in the Associated Press Top 25 outside of Nova, that string of victories isn't quite as impressive.
It appears the selection committee felt the same way, giving the Wildcats a slew of tests before the Final Four. Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio provided his thoughts on the region:
Virginia, another program on the cusp of a No. 1 seed, is the second seed in the East. With the talent of Oklahoma, Louisville, Northern Iowa and Michigan State, Jones' assessment might very well be correct.
Then there's the matter of the No. 8 seed in the bracket. If N.C. State can survive against LSU, the Wolfpack's roster has the talent to take down a No. 1 seed. The trio of Cat Barber, Trevor Lacey and Ralston Turner have already taken down Duke, North Carolina and Louisville this season.
Tack on the fact that BeeJay Anya is a shot-blocking machine, and the Pack has all the tools to pull the upset. In fact, Jay Williams of ESPN believes N.C. State will come out on top in the third-round matchup:
Of course, the Pack will need a win over LSU in order to even reach the third round. That's the fun of March—not everything goes to plan, and even the best-laid plans can go to crap even in the round of 64 for a program.
Regardless of how it all shakes out, all eyes will be on the East region to behold whatever type of lunacy takes place. Between the blossoming teams and those already established as some of the best in the country, the 12 games in the East will be special.
