NCAA Tournament Schedule 2015: Where and When to Watch Every Game

Steven CookMar 16, 2015

It's officially 2015 NCAA tournament time, which means the next three weekends will be jam-packed with 67 thrilling contests—many of which will inevitably come down to the wire.

Seven-game series in the NBA allow for the best team to win more often than not, but absolutely anything can happen in the span of a 40-minute game. One lackluster performance can send the most elite teams packing, while a few overlooked sleepers make runs each and every year.

Even though Selection Sunday just took place, it's a short turnaround until the start of play with Tuesday and Wednesday's first-round games adding even more intrigue to the opening week of games.

Opening Weekend Games to Watch

No. 5 Utah vs. No. 12 Stephen F. Austin

This one has upset written all over it, and not just because of it being a matchup between No. 5 and No. 12 seeds.

The fifth-seeded Utah Utes more than held their own in Pac-12 play, but hit a wall at the end of the season. A road loss at Oregon on Feb. 22 started a free fall, as the Utes lost four of their final seven contests to close out the season.

As for their opposition, Stephen F. Austin has been dazzling folks around the nation all season with its pretty style of basketball that produces 79.5 points per game (ninth in the nation), 17.8 assists (first) and a 49.1 percent clip from the field (fifth). A vast majority of the Lumberjacks have experience from last season's upset of No. 5 VCU and will be intent on repeating history.

Not only does Utah lack that same NCAA experience, but it is headed in the wrong direction lately, as noted by USA Today's Nicole Auerbach:

Utah's Delon Wright and Jakob Poeltl are more than capable of having big games to lead the Utes to victory, but they will have their hands full with a Lumberjacks team looking to win in the NCAA tournament for a second straight year.

No. 2 Virginia vs. No. 15 Belmont

It may not have the feel of an upset with No. 2 Virginia looking the part of a Final Four contender, but Belmont could certainly give the Cavaliers a run for their money in the second round.

The Bruins won seven straight games to close out the season, including a game against Murray State in which they made a last-second shot, which propelled them to the NCAA tournament. Few teams can stroke it better from outside, as Craig Bradshaw and Evan Bradds—the two leading scorers—each shoot above 41 percent from beyond the arc.

Belmont's streaky shooting and head coach Rick Byrd's leadership have turned the Bruins into a Cinderella team in years past, but doing so against the Cavaliers will be impossibly difficult. Virginia ranks a lowly 225th in points per game, yet still entered the month of March with just one regular-season loss.

However, Belmont could have some help on its side, as Scout.com's Evan Daniels noted:

The Bruins will be a trendy upset pick, in part due to what Belmont has done on the big stage in recent history, but largely due to question marks surrounding Virginia. The Cavaliers' painfully slow style of play can work to their opponents' advantage when they hit shots, as it allows them to stay in games and decreases Virginia's opportunities to play to its strengths on offense.

Whether or not Virginia allows that to happen remains to be seen, but the teams' two contrasting styles will make for an intriguing 40 minutes.
