LA Marathon 2015: 54 People Hospitalized Amid Hot Weather Conditions During Race
Despite early precautions taken by race organizers to compensate for an unusually hot day in Los Angeles, the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon reportedly saw at least 54 people taken to the hospital.
In addition to the 54 runners hospitalized, 81 people were treated for various ailments on the course, according to James Queally of the Los Angeles Times.
All 54 runners who were taken to the hospital are in stable condition, Queally noted, while information about the ailments for the 81 treated on the route was not immediately available.
Early in the morning, Carlos Lozano of the Los Angeles Times reported that the marathon was going to start 30 minutes early in anticipation of potential record-breaking temperatures.
"The extra precautions are being taken to help the estimated 26,000 runners cope with what weather forecasters are predicting will be record breaking heat for the annual event, with temperatures reaching the upper-80s by noon," Lozano wrote.
Los Angeles didn't get as hot as initially anticipated, according to the Times, even though it topped 90 degrees in the City of Angels in the early afternoon, per Weather.com.
Fortunately, everyone who has needed treatment appears to be recovering well. It's an unfortunate aspect of marathon racing that is impossible to avoid, as even the best athletes can get fatigued during a 26.2-mile run.
