India Maintain Perfect Record with Win over Zimbabwe

3 of 4

India (288/4) bt. Zimbabwe (287) by six wickets.

Suresh Raina's unbeaten century saw India to a six-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in Auckland in their final Pool B match on Saturday.

The defending champions head into the quarter-finals with a perfect record at the 2015 World Cup.

An impressive 138 from Brendan Taylor in his final Zimbabwe international had seen his team to a defendable total of 287, and India were on the ropes early in their innings.

However, a mammoth partnership from Raina and MS Dhoni saw India to a confident victory in the end as they maintained their perfect record in Australia and New Zealand and broke a World Cup record in the process, per cricket statistician Mazher Arshad:

"

India successfully chase 288, making it their highest chase in World Cup matches. Also it is India's 10th consecutive win in WC matches.

— Mazher Arshad (@cricket_U) March 14, 2015"

India won the toss and opted to field as they looked to back the impressive form their bowlers have shown in this tournament so far.

They were rewarded with early wickets as Chamu Chibhabha, Hamilton Masakadza and Solomon Mire were all dismissed cheaply to leave Zimbabwe 33-3 in the 11th over.

However, Taylor and Sean Williams steadied the ship, putting on 93 together before the latter fell for 50 in the 29th over, caught and bowled by Ravi Ashwin.

Craig Ervine joined Taylor at the crease and proved a worthy partner as he allowed the skipper to wrestle the momentum from the Indians, scoring 138 from 100 balls, including hitting 25 off one Ravindra Jadeja over per ICC:

"

Remarkable stuff! 25 off the Jadeja over, Brendan Taylor looks a man possessed! #Zim 232 for 4 http://t.co/IEbquWCERH pic.twitter.com/FDkTZl6W0G

— ICC (@ICC) March 14, 2015"

Ervine—who scored 27—and Taylor put on 109 together in just over 13 overs to put Zimbabwe in position for a big total.

However, Mohit Sharma dismissed them both in quick succession to take the wind out of the Zimbabwean sails, and they were eventually all out for 287—the highest total conceded by the Indian team at this World Cup.

It was all about Taylor in his final Zimbabwe international, the right-handed batsman's century truly a mark of his immense quality, per Cricket Australia:

"

Well done, @BrendanTaylor86! He leaves the field after a brilliant 138 in his final knock for #ZIM! #cwc15 pic.twitter.com/lhN2Mh7NII

— cricket.com.au (@CricketAus) March 14, 2015"

In response, India were struggling, as their top four all went cheaply to leave them 92-4 as they chased 288, uncharted territory in this World Cup.

However, India's batting runs deep, as Raina and captain Dhoni showed as they put on an unbeaten 196 together to win the match with eight balls to spare.

It was slow going when the pair first came together at the crease, but they opened up in the latter stages to secure the victory, eventually with ease.

Raina's 110 not out was an excellent knock, vital at a nervy time for the Indians who were looking to continue their perfect record at the tournament Down Under.

Dhoni was at his brilliant, destructive best as he grew into his innings, eventually finishing unbeaten on 85, hitting a huge six over square leg to win the match at Eden Park, per ESPNcricinfo:

"

MS Dhoni seals it with a six. India win six out of six http://t.co/JZG0QH8tsf #CWC15 #INDvZIM

— ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) March 14, 2015"

Already confirmed as Pool B winners, India go through to the quarter-finals with a perfect record and will face Bangladesh, while Zimbabwe head home with just a single win from the tournament.

Australia Crush Scotland to Secure 2nd Spot in Pool A

4 of 4

Australia (133/3) bt. Scotland (130) by seven wickets.

Australia secured second spot in Pool A on Saturday at the 2015 World Cup as they crushed Scotland by seven wickets in Hobart.

Scotland's largely pitiful batting in the tournament continued as they were bowled out for 130 on their way to a sixth defeat from six.

However, Australia's bowlers were at their destructive best, Mitchell Starc claiming four wickets for just 14 runs as Matt Machan top-scored for Scotland with 40.

The co-hosts chased down the 131 target inside 16 overs in a rain-affected innings, with skipper Michael Clarke promoted to opener.

Having secured second spot in Pool A, Australia will now face either Pakistan or Ireland—who play on Sunday in the final group encounter—at the last-eight stage, while Scotland finish bottom of the group.

Clarke won the toss and put Scotland in to bat, Starc claiming the wickets of opening pair Kyle Coetzer and Calum MacLeod in the first seven overs, the former for a duck.

Along with Coetzer, four other Scottish batsmen were dismissed without a run as only Machan found any kind of rhythm, hitting six boundaries in his 35-ball knock, per ByTheMin Cricket:

"

Machan belts Johnson for 10 from the 15th, lovely stuff. #Sco's RR- great, wicket column- not so much. 74/5 (15). Maxi continues.

— ByTheMin Cricket (@ByTheMinCricket) March 14, 2015"

Scotland were all out for 130 in 25.4 overs, Starc bookending the innings nicely with the last two scalps also, while Pat Cummins ended with figures of 3-42.

Australia did not mess around as they looked to chase down the lowly target, Clarke's 47 coming at a run a ball, while Aaron Finch hit 20 from 10.

However, they could not beat the rain, and there was a long and frustrating delay with Australia needing a victory to take an important second spot and avoid a tricky quarter-final against South Africa, per Star Sports:

"

More rain in Hobart after some blue skies! If the match is abandoned, Australia will finish third in Group A due to number of wins. #AUSvSCO

— STAR Sports (@StarSportsIndia) March 14, 2015"

When they eventually had the opportunity to return to the field, Australia were taking no chances, and David Warner and James Faulkner scored the remaining 39 runs in just 12 balls to secure the win.

The Aussies sail through to the quarter-finals and will be favourites to make the last four no matter who their opponents end up being.
