Shawn Porter vs. Erick Bone: Winner, Recap and Analysis
The second Premier Boxing Champions card got off to a bang on Friday night.
Shawn "Showtime" Porter (25-1-1, 16 KO) scored a fifth-round KO over late-replacement Erick Bone in Ontario, California. Originally, Porter was supposed to face Roberto Garcia, but the latter didn't show for the weigh-in and was scratched from the card, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael.
It is believed Garcia was more than four pounds over the 147-pound limit.
Bone was a late add, but he fought with guts and may have caught a bad break when he appeared to twist his ankle early in the fifth round. Like many Porter fights, the action took place on the inside, and there was a ton of roughhousing. During an exchange on the ropes, Bone went down from a slip and appeared to hurt himself.

He was limping slightly, and Porter took full advantage by banging Bone to the body. A hard right hand caused Bone to take a knee. Already bleeding from the nose from some hard shots that landed in the first round, Bone was looking worse for wear.
Moments after he rose from the knockdown, Porter was pouring it on going almost exclusively to the body. The shots forced Bone to drop his hands, and Porter landed the definitive right hand that put his game opponent down for the count.
Early on, Bone was holding his own. He landed a good number of counter shots on an eager and sometimes clumsy Porter. Unfortunately for Bone, he didn't have the power to stun the former IBF champion. Porter got the better of the exchanges, but Bone seemed to earn his respect.
UCN's Steve Kim enjoyed the fight and ranked it above a past Porter bout.
Once the fight was over Porter acknowledged Bone's competitiveness. In the post-fight interview, per the Spike TV broadcast, Porter said, "I watched a little bit of him on tape thinking he was going to be the guy for us. I knew he would be tough. He has quick hands and likes to throw with some power."
Porter was in a no-win situation with this fight. He didn't look to be at the top of his game. He took some shots that he probably shouldn't have, and he looked a bit too eager at times.
However, even if he had knocked Bone out in the first 30 seconds, some people might have dismissed the performance because it came against a last-minute stand-in.
The most important thing is that Porter got the win, and it did come by stoppage. He's in the mix to face Keith "One Time" Thurman. One Time was last week's big winner from the PBC on NBC card in Las Vegas.
That fight would be very interesting on a future PBC card. We'll see if Al Haymon and Co. deliver.
