Jacksonville Jaguars: Updated Salary Cap Breakdown at Start of Free Agency

Evan ReierMar 13, 2015

To say that the first few days of free agency have been busy would be an understatement. The Jacksonville Jaguars have, as expected, had a hectic few days, with signings, releases and rumors all taking over Jaguars related news.

General manager Dave Caldwell used the Jaguars' massive amount of cap space to his advantage in the opening days of free agency. The Jaguars have signed seven players so far, including tight end Julius Thomas, the Jaguars highest-profile signing in recent memory.

With the signings, the Jaguars have released a couple of players, most recently defensive lineman Red Bryant.

Bryant signed with the Jaguars last season, and recorded 23 combined tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in his year with the Jags. Bryant opened up just under $4 million in cap space.

The Jaguars started off free agency with just over $68,477,507. Let's see how the different signings have the left the Jaguars after the first few days.

Jermey ParnellEst. $6,400,000
Julius Thomas$9,000,000
Jared Odrick$4,000,000
Dan SkutaEst. $4,100,000
Davon House$4,500,000
Sergio Brown$1,750,000
Bryan Walters?
TotalAt least $29,750,000

The Jaguars, depending on the official numbers for Dan Skuta, Jermey Parnell and Bryan Walters, have spent upwards of $29,750,000 since Monday.

Before that statistic drives you insane, realize that Caldwell knew that it was time for the Jaguars to make big moves in free agency, and he did well to sign this group of players and build the Jags.

After subtracting the estimated $29,750,000 from the Jaguars $68,477,507, the Jaguars had $38,727,507 remaining in cap space.

However, the Jaguars now have an estimated cap space of $36,002,511, according to Over the Cap.

Red Bryant was an important team player for the Jaguars in 2014, but was released on March 12.

While the Jaguars have used a large portion of their cap space for this year, they still have a huge amount of money for the rest of this free-agency period. They currently rank fourth in available cap space in the NFL.

The Jaguars still have plenty of time to use that cap space, not to mention the NFL draft in the coming month.

The Jaguars have built the current team through the draft, and will most likely continue to do so in the coming years. That may mean that the Jaguars will remain quiet for the rest of free agency.

Keep in mind, however, that the cheap rookie deals of the draft won't use a lot of cap space for the Jaguars, and that there will still be plenty of money available despite the draft.

Whether the Jaguars plan to spend more money or not remains to be seen. There may a few talents out there who can really help the Jaguars in 2015, and with $36,002,511 available, the option is definitely there.
