Brendan Taylor Retires, Bangladesh Continue Gritty Fight and More from Day 28
Bangladesh put up a gritty fight against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton with Mahmudullah notching up an impressive, unbeaten 128 off 123 balls.
He was well-supported by Soumya Sarkar and Sabbir Rahman as Bangladesh clobbered together 288 batting first. It was Mahmudullah's second ton in as many matches, and he is only the second Bangladeshi ever to achieve this feat in ODIs.
His effort was in vain, though, as Martin Guptill scored 105 off 100 and Ross Taylor added 56 off 97 balls as the Black Caps clinched a three-wicket win with seven balls remaining.
Over in Sydney, England concluded a hollow nine-wicket win over Afghanistan in a rain-affected affair. Having already bowed out of the tournament, England's win means little after they thoroughly embarrassed themselves in the group stages.
The win for New Zealand doesn't change much in terms of the points tables, and the hosts remain secure in top spot while Bangladesh stay fourth. Australia and Scotland will tussle on Saturday to determine number one and two, but rain is threatening to wash out proceedings—which will see Australia finish third with Sri Lanka second in Pool A. This will set up a quarter-final clash between rivals South Africa and Australia next week.
Elsewhere, Brendan Taylor has announced his retirement from international cricket, as per ESPNCricinfo. He will play his final game for Zimbabwe on Saturday when his team takes on India. He has signed a three-year Kolpak deal with Nottinghamshire.
Fielding of the day
This section would usually be reserved for “catch of the day,” but it has had to be changed to "fielding of the day" because of a superb effort from one particular player. That honour goes to New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum, who put in a superhuman attempt to save four runs—however, his astonishing dive was in vain and the four was given. You can watch the video here.
Shot of the day
Mohammad Nabi hit the only six of Afghanistan's innings, and he earns himself the title of shot of the day. Skipping down the track to James Tredwell, Nabi made room for himself and lofted the ball over cover for a stunning six. He ended up with just 16 runs in the end but deserves a pat on the back for his fine effort.
Delivery of the day
Trent Boult has been one of the most impressive bowlers of this tournament, and he proved again why when he dismissed Imrul Kayes early on. It was a classic set up from the opening bowler, rattling him with a shorter ball and then landing a length delivery, which did too much for Kayes to defend, and he was bowled through the gate.
Excitement now turns to the quarter-finals
It feels like the Pool stages have gone on forever, but excitement is now building for the knockouts. There are some potentially tasty encounters set up for the latter stages of the tournament, and all eyes will be on the likes of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and India to see if they can live up to expectations.
