Despite Mahmudullah's knock of 128 and Shakib Al Hasan's bowling figures of 4-55, New Zealand underlined their resiliency to confirm a 100 percent Pool A record.

Elsewhere, Ian Bell's unbeaten 52 led England to a nine-wicket victory over Afghanistan.

England Cruise to Simple Victory over Afghanistan

3 of 4

England (101/1) bt. Afghanistan (111/7) by nine wickets (D/L method).

England took just 18.1 overs to chase down a revised target of 101 during a rain-soaked session in Sydney. Afghanistan reached 111/7 from 36.2 overs, but had their total lowered via the Duckworth-Lewis method due persistent wet weather. England were given 25 overs to reach the reduced score, a target they destroyed with little trouble.

Shafiqullah was Afghanistan's highest scorer with the bat, hitting 30 runs from 64 balls. The middle order batsman received very little help from his colleagues, however, with Afghanistan's big-hitters losing their wickets quickly before the rain set in.

The side struggled to 101/7 before Shafiqullah was dismissed by James Tredwell (1-25). Nawroz Mangal (4), Javed Ahmadi (7), Asfar Zazai (6), Samiullah Shenwari (7) and Nasir Jamal (17) barely had time to think before Stuart Broad (1-18), James Anderson (1-18) and Ravi Bopara (2-31) played with the kind of confidence that has been lacking from England throughout the tournament.

Chris Jordan worked quickly to dismiss Zazai and Shenwari, posting impressive bowling figures of 2-13.

The wickets of Mohammad Nabi (16) and Shafiqullah were the last to fall, before Afghanistan's innings ended with 36.2 overs played. As reported by the ECB's official Twitter account, it look as it proceedings wouldn't resume at this point:

England continued their dominance after the break, led by an 83-run partnership between openers Alex Hales (37) and Ian Bell (52 n.o.). James Taylor (8 n.o.) joined Bell at the crease after Hamid Hassan (1-17) took Hales' wicket, but Afghanistan's hopes of an early blitz were already over.

Bell and Taylor took no chances when racking up the final runs with 41 balls to play.

New Zealand Prove Too Strong for Bangladesh

4 of 4

New Zealand (290/7) bt. Bangladesh (288/7) by three wickets.

Martin Guptill's 105 led New Zealand to an entertaining three-wicket victory over Bangladesh, a match which went down to the final two overs in Hamilton.

New Zealand put Bangladesh into bat, a decision which provided immediate results. Trent Boult (2-56) has been one of the stars of the World Cup so far, consistently grabbing important wickets for the joint-hosts. He did most of his work in the early stages on Friday, dismissing Imrul Kayes (2) and Tamim Iqbal (13) with the score at 27/2 after 9.4 overs.

Soumya Sarkar (51) and Mahmudullah then got to work for Bangladesh, racking up a partnership of 90. Mahmudullah's 128 included 12 fours, remaining at the crease to face 123 balls during the rest of the side's batting effort. Once Sarkar was sent packing by Daniel Vettori (1-42) on 117/3, New Zealand were able to establish a steady flow of wickets.

Corey Anderson (2-43) shot into life, ending the stand of Shakib Al Hasan (23) and Mushfiqur Rahim (15) without serious scores being racked up. At 182/5, the next partnership was to be crucial. Unfortunately for Bangladesh, Sabbir Rahman (40) and Nasir Hossain (11) were unable to reach the 300 mark, with Grant Elliot (2-27) working his way through the lower order as the 50 overs concluded.

Although Bangladesh put up a respectable total of 288, they would need to quickly work through New Zealand's wickets to remain in the contest. Opening batsman Guptill had other ideas, however, striking 105 from 100 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes. Sky Sports highlighted the variation of his shots:

Shakib (4-55) was to keep Bangladesh's hopes alive. He dismissed Brendon McCullum (8) and Kane Williamson (1) inside five overs, giving New Zealand a score of 33/2. Guptill struggled to find a partner who shared his confidence on the day, until Ross Taylor worked sharply to bring up 56 runs of his own. He and Guptill shared 131 before the latter fell to Shakib, per Sky Sports:

Taylor brought up his half-century shortly afterwards, but New Zealand began to back themselves into a tight situation. Elliot (39) was sent back to the pavilion by Rubel (1-40) with the score at 210/4. Just nine runs later, Taylor's innings ended when Nasir (2-32) grabbed his wicket on review.

Anderson (39) and Luke Ronchi (9) faced a pressured stand at this point, amplified when Ronchi aimed for the boundary and was caught by Nasir to confirm Shakib's fourth wicket of the day. Bangladesh were getting closer with five overs remaining and New Zealand's score set at 249/6. Sky Sports highlighted this moment:

A huge drop from Nasir then left Vettori (16 n.o.) at the wicket, per Sky Sports:

Nasir was involved in everything as the match came to an end. Anderson whacked a six into the crowd before Nasir took his wicket on the next ball with a pitch toward middle stump.

New Zealand needed nine from as many balls, with Bangladesh knowing a boundary would most likely end their chances. Amazingly, Tim Southee (12 n.o.) hit six and four consecutively to confirm an excellent victory.
