Boychuk talked about the decision in the official announcement:
"“Ever since I came to the Islanders, the organization has been incredible to both myself and my family,” Boychuk said. “I am proud to be an Islander and look forward to competing every night in front of such a passionate fan base for many years to come.”

The 31-year-old veteran has 32 points on the season (seven goals and 25 assists), which is already a career high. He started his career as a member of the Colorado Avalanche, spent six seasons with the Boston Bruins and has thrived as a defender on the back end for the Islanders this year.
New York is battling for postseason position in a tight Eastern Conference race, and Boychuk’s ability to provide solid defense and get involved in the offensive attack is a big reason why. He is fifth on the team in assists, despite his designation as a defender, and he has created a number of scoring opportunities for his teammates.
In fact, the Islanders are third in the league in goals per game, and Boychuk’s assists have certainly contributed to that.
He has apparently done enough in his first season with the Islanders to inspire sufficient confidence from the front office to keep him aboard with a long-term deal.
