Colon Tweets Signing

Thursday, March 12

According to Colon on Twitter, he and the Jets have agreed to terms on a deal that will keep him in New York for the third consecutive season:

Per Kimberley Martin of Newsday, Colon's deal with the Jets is for the league minimum:

The Jets front office seems to have done a quick 180 on Colon, as Kristian Dyer of Metro New York reported on March 1 the team was likely to move on from the 31-year-old:

"

It shouldn't come as a surprise, but Willie Colon's tenure with the New York Jets looks as though it will end after two years, with sources telling Metro New York that the starting right guard won't be coming back.

...

"There's a push to go younger along the offensive line," a source told Dyer. "In particular at right guard the Jets are going to want to go a different route. It isn't anything Willie did or didn't do."

"

However, nothing is official in sports until it is. Colon may not be the dynamic young starter New York seeks on the offensive line, but he can serve a role as a starter or come off of the bench in spots next season.

Colon hasn't missed a game in two seasons with the Jets. He's in the twilight of his career, yet there is a lot of value in having a player who coaches can put on the field 16 weeks every year. The Jets saw that and were able to get a reasonable deal done to make it happen.
