San Francisco 49ers: A Letter of Thanks to Linebacker Patrick Willis
Tuesday, March 10, 2015 marks the end of an era in San Francisco 49ers history.
The date is, of course, associated with the end of a phenomenal and storied career. It is the day that perennial Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis retired from the NFL.
This day in 49ers history will certainly disappear from memory. But the efforts and legacy of Willis' efforts cannot be forgotten. He was drafted at a time when the 49ers organization was at a low point in its storied history. It didn't take long for him to turn into one of the greatest players to grace the field.

And not just in a 49ers uniform.
''I have no regrets," Willis stated in an emotional press conference to announce his decision (Via Yahoo Sports, h/t Janie McCauley of AP Sports). "I've had the most amazing eight years of football of my life. I am so humbled to have had this opportunity. I've been so humbled to have played this game.''
Willis leaves the NFL on his own terms. Injuries to his feet took their toll. And the desire to have an impacting life beyond football also carried weight.

''He redefined his position,'' coach Jim Tomsula said via McCauley. ''That's a different man. Pat changed a lot of lives here. Pat will change a lot of lives. ... I've never heard Pat Willis complain.''
The man who never complained did redefine his position. His statistics do the talking for his efforts on the field.
Over his eight seasons with the 49ers, Willis was nominated to the Pro Bowl seven times. In six of those years, he was selected as a first-team All-Pro.
The 2007 Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year ended his career with 732 tackles, 16 forced fumbles, 55 passes defended and 20.5 sacks.
But his efforts go far beyond the numbers.
Willis was the heart of this San Francisco franchise. He was a leader on and off the field.
For that, he deserves our utmost thanks.
Willis may never read this. But if he does, it is my hope that he can look back at his career in San Francisco and fully grasp the appreciation and gratitude that every member of the 49er Faithful hold for him and what he did here.
Dear Patrick,
On behalf of all the fans that love the 49ers franchise, I would like to extend my deepest thanks and most heartfelt congratulations on your career. Your efforts are those which come around once in a lifetime.
And it has been more than a pleasure to watch you on the field. Your work ethic is a model by which everyone can admire.
You deserve these thanks from all of us for being the best player that you could be. You exceeded above all expectations and earned everything that you accomplished during your career.

But you also deserve credit for so much more.
It didn't take long for us fans to realize that our team had something special. You quickly emerged as a leader within the clubhouse—a model that epitomizes what it takes to succeed in every aspect of life. We looked up to you, and I'm sure that each one of your teammates felt the same way.
I would like to thank you for your humility and your honest demeanor. You have that rare ability to speak volumes when it's needed the most. Your words are heard, and your efforts set the highest of standards.
I would also like to thank you for helping transform this 49ers team into what it has become today. When you were drafted in 2007, there wasn't much that us fans could get behind. Our team was still struggling and still trying to find its way.
You changed that. You brought a winning mentality to this organization. And that type of person doesn't come around very often.
I respect your decision to walk away from the game you love at a time when you have a higher calling. You are ending your NFL career on your own terms, which is something all of us should aspire to do.
Whatever your pursuits from here may be, I know that you will succeed. You have more than proven that ability. Your dedication and perseverance are perfect examples of this.

I hope and trust that young 49ers fans can look back upon your career and say, "I remember watching Patrick Willis play." I hope that they too draw inspiration from your efforts. After all, it's the young people who may be most affected by what you have done.
And that is truly remarkable.
Us fans will miss seeing you patrol the field on Sundays. We will miss your pregame speeches and how effectively you would fire up our team.
But our recollections of those moments will serve as a reminder to how great you were.
More importantly, these moments remind us of how great you will continue to be.
I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors and am forever grateful to have seen you be a part of this team.
Thank you.
Most Sincerely,
Peter Panacy
A Member of the 49ers Faithful
