Sri Lanka (363/9) beat Scotland by (XX) runs Kumar Sangakkara scored his fourth century in four matches at the 2015 Cricket World Cup to set Sri Lanka on their way to a XX-run win over a valiant Scotland team at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. The 37-year-old made his 124 from just 95 balls, as he and Tillakaratne Dilshan—who made a fine 104 himself—took the game away from the Scots with a thrilling 195-run partnership. A late flurry of 51 from 21 balls from Angelo Mathews helped push Sri Lanka to an imposing total of 363/9. It was always going to be a total beyond a Scotland team that have failed to win a game at this World Cup and although Freddie Coleman bagged a diligent 70, they were always behind the rate and finished well short on XX. For Sri Lanka, Sangakkara was the star of the show once again, as the 37-year-old’s latest innings sent even more records tumbling. As we can see here courtesy of BBC Test Match Special, he’s special player indeed: He seems to thrive when playing alongside Dilshan too and after Scotland snaffled the wicket of Lahiru Thirimanne early on, they were both at the crease together in just the sixth over. While Scottish spirits were naturally buoyed by that early wicket, the majestic stroke play of the duo would soon put pay to that. As noted by Cricket Record, the duo love playing in Hobart: Their delectable array of shot-making pushed Sri Lanka towards a massive total and when Dilshan eventually departed in the 35th over, the stage was set for skipper Mathews to come in an make some brisk runs at the end of the innings. His 51 off 21 balls contained one four and six towering sixes. As noted by OptaJim, it was an almost unprecedentedly fast half-century from the captain: After he was eventually caught out—on the back of four consecutive sixes, no less—Sri Lanka still had six overs to go and were set on 326/6. But credit must go to the death bowling of the Scottish players, who were able to restrict their opponents to a score of 363/9. It would have been some chase from the Scots and after Kyle Coezter’s magnificent century against Bangladesh they would have felt as if they had an outside chance. But after he departed for a duck on just the second ball of the day, any lingering hopes were obliterated. Scotland lost a couple more quick wickets early in the innings to plunge them into massive trouble at 44/3 and it looked set to be an easy day’s work for Sri Lanka. But a determined partnership of 118 from Coleman and Preston Mommsen ensured that Scotland were going to make their illustrious opponents work hard for their win. Fox Sports Cricket paid tribute to Coleman after his brisk half-century: But the Scots lost both men in quick succession and with the rate spiralling out of control, the game was poised to meander to a close. Sri Lanka are going to be a very dangerous team in the quarter-finals. In Sangakkara they have a man who is undeniably the finest limited overs batsman in the world at the moment and an exemplary, aggressive opener in Dilshan too. Those players are capable of carrying Sri Lanka through matches, but if they’re to be considered serious contenders for the title they need to improve on the bowling front. They’ve badly missed the subtle spin variations of Rangana Herath in the previous two matches and need to find a way of strangling teams in the middle overs of their batting effort. x

India Show Their Class in Victory over Ireland

India (260/2) beat Ireland (259) by eight wickets

Shikhar Dhawan's century led India to victory over Ireland on Tuesday, confirming five wins out of five for Duncan Fletcher's team.

Although he had a quiet day, MS Dhoni brought up an impressive stat with the win, per Sky Sports:

Ireland won the toss and decided to bat. They started well, too, with Paul Stirling (42) and William Porterfield (67) putting up a partnership of 89 before the former was dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin (2-38) in the 14th over.

Ed Joyce added two to Ireland's score of 92/2 when Suresh Raina (1-40) took his only wicket of the day. Niall O'Brien then provided the side with a smart 75 from as many balls, putting together a useful partnership of 53 with Porterfield before the captain's wicket fell to Mohit Sharma (1-38).

O'Brien and Andy Balbirnie (24) combined for 61 to get things moving for the Irish, but when Balbirnie was dismissed by Ashwin with the score at 206/4, all hell broke loose as the 39th over approached.

Kevin O'Brien managed one and was eliminated by Mohammed Shami (3-41) two runs later. The Irish lower order simply crumbled, with Gary Wilson (6) failing to significantly aid the team's total after losing his wicket to Ravindra Jadeja (1-45).

Niall O'Brien's stand was finished with eight overs remaining as Shami hit his stride. He departed on 227/8, and just one run later, Stuart Thompson (2) was run out by Virat Kohli. George Dockrell (6) and Alex Cusack (11) did their utmost to fend off India's attack, but Umesh Yadav (1-34) and Shami left only John Mooney (12 n.o.) standing at the crease.

The ICC tweeted confirmation of Ireland's collapse:

After such a useful start, Ireland should have been disappointed with failing to hit 300 and seeing out the 50 overs, falling with 48.6 complete.

The tone for India's chase would be set in the early stages of their batting effort. Dhawan (100) and Rohit Sharma (64) managed 174 between them, remaining at the crease for 23.2 overs before Thompson (2-45) took the latter's wicket.

Dhawan's excellent knock came from 85 balls, including 11 fours and five sixes before Thompson struck again with the score at 190/2. Sky Sports highlighted the moment Dhawan reached 100:

The damage was done by this point, with Ireland needing a quick burst of wickets to significantly impact Pool B. Kohli (44) and Ajinkya Rahane (33) ensured this didn't happen, with Kohli driving the ball toward the boundary to bring up the win.
