10 Greatest Manchester United vs. Arsenal FA Cup Moments

Rob DawsonMar 8, 2015

Manchester United face Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Old Trafford on Monday night.

And it's not the first battle the two have had in the competition. The two teams have played out some of the greatest FA Cup moments, including the 1979 "Five-minute final" and Ryan Giggs' winner in the 1999 semi-final replay.

Ahead of their latest meeting, here are 10 of the greatest moments of United's FA Cup clashes with Arsenal. Use the comments section below to agree, disagree or add your own.

Sammy McIlroy's Equaliser (1979)

1 of 10

With five minutes to go in the 1979 FA Cup final, Arsenal were cruising against United thanks to goals from Brian Talbot and Frank Stapleton. Gordon McQueen, playing as a makeshift centre forward, pulled one back for United with four minutes to go before Sammy McIlroy's 88th-minute equaliser sent the United fans in the near 100,000 crowd berserk. Little did they know what was about to happen.

Alan Sunderland's Wembley Winner (1979)

2 of 10

The Arsenal players looked beaten after McIlroy levelled the 1979 final at 2-2. But that was until Liam Brady crossed from the left to give Alan Sunderland the chance to score the most unlikely of last-minute winners. He didn't pass up the opportunity and Arsenal lifted the trophy at United's expense.

Norman Whiteside Sends United to Wembley (1983)

3 of 10

When United met Arsenal in the 1983 semi-final, Norman Whiteside was still two years away from his most famous FA Cup moment. But his winner at Villa Park wasn't a bad start. And after sending United to Wembley, he scored in the replay against Brighton to help United to the trophy with a 4-0 win.

Peter Schmeichel's Penalty Save (1999)

4 of 10

The 1999 FA Cup semi-final replay will always be remembered for Giggs' goal. But it would never have happened if Peter Schmeichel hadn't saved a stoppage time penalty. With the score level at 1-1, Ray Parlour was tripped in the box by a clumsy Phil Neville challenge. Dennis Bergkamp stepped up to take the penalty but saw his effort saved by Schmeichel, sending the tie into extra time where Giggs became a hero.

Ryan Giggs' Moment of Magic (1999)

5 of 10

One of the most famous moments of United's treble season. The first semi-final in 1999 ended in a 0-0 draw. And United were hanging on in the replay after Roy Keane's red card until Patrick Vieira misplaced a pass. The ball fell to Giggs, who wriggled his way through the Arsenal defence before shooting into the roof of the net and baring his impossibly hairy chest.

Ryan Giggs and THAT Miss (2003)

6 of 10

With United's fifth-round tie against Arsenal goalless, Giggs managed to shoot over the bar with an open goal to aim at after rounding David Seaman. Arsenal took full advantage with Edu and Sylvain Wiltord scoring in a 2-0 win, despite Arsene Wenger resting both Bergkamp and Thierry Henry.

David Beckham and the Boot (2003)

7 of 10

As bad as Giggs' miss was, it's not really what the tie is remembered for. The story goes that Sir Alex Ferguson, so annoyed at the manner of the defeat, walked into the dressing room and kicked a stray boot that ended up hitting David Beckham in the face. The plaster above Beckham's eye told its own story. The England captain was sold to Real Madrid that summer.

United Beat the Invincibles (2004)

8 of 10

Arsenal were well on their way to completing an unbeaten Premier League season when they met United in the FA Cup semi-final in 2004. But they were denied a league and cup double, and a third successive FA Cup triumph. Giggs cut the ball back to Paul Scholes to score the only goal of the game at Villa Park, sending United into the final where they beat Millwall. It remains United's last FA Cup success.

United Pay the Penalty (2005)

9 of 10

After winning the FA Cup in 2004, United made it to the final in the defence of their trophy. There, they dominated Arsenal for 90 minutes and extra time but couldn't find a goal, with Ruud van Nistelrooy guilty of missing a series of chances. But it was Arsenal who held their nerve in the penalty shoot-out to claim the most fortunate of victories.

The Da Silva's Day (2011)

10 of 10

It became almost impossible for United fans to predict Ferguson's teams during his 26 years in charge. But even for him, picking a midfield of Rafael, Fabio, Darron Gibson and John O'Shea to play Arsenal in the 2011 FA Cup quarter-final was a surprise. It was even more surprising that United won comfortably, with Fabio and Wayne Rooney scoring in a 2-0 win.
