WWE Programming's Best Match for Week of March 1

Brad JonesMar 7, 2015

As WWE continues down the road to WrestleMania, it's clear that talent are staking their claim for a spot on the card. From the hugely competitive Intercontinental Championship picture to the growing list of competitors who've entered into the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, the event looks set to be packed with Superstars.

However, the key to an exciting multiman match is a wrestler who can deliver the goods between the ropes. Now is the time for the men and women of WWE to demonstrate just why they deserve a spot at WrestleMania 31—and that's exactly what many of them have been doing this week.

Honourable Mentions

The ailing Divas division of the main roster seems to have been given something of a shot in the arm thanks to the recent #GiveDivasAChance Twitter campaign and the return of AJ Lee. The Black Widow had a good match with Brie Bella on SmackDown, but let's hope there are bigger plans for the women at WrestleMania.

SmackDown also featured an above-par tag team main event. Focusing on talent gunning for the intercontinental title in this match made for a better contest than the bloated main event of top fan favourites vs. Authority representatives that's been a SmackDown staple for some months now.

Elsewhere, Dean Ambrose and Bad News Barrett had a good singles match to open Raw. Like much of Ambrose's recent feud with Bray Wyatt, it was slightly undermined by a lack of any meaningful storyline progression, but the action itself was good.

This week's NXT began with an intriguing match between Adam Rose and Tyler Breeze. Despite being brief, there were definite flashes of potential in this pairing. Their characters are so in tune that you might see them as a tag team, but their chemistry in the ring suggests they're better suited as rivals.

Match of the Week for Week of Mar. 1: Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte for the NXT Women's Championship on NXT

Despite some decent competition, no other bout captured the feeling of a main event as well as Charlotte's attempt to reclaim her title from Sasha Banks on this week's edition of NXT.

The NXT Women's Championship has been built up wonderfully over the past couple of years. Its first two champions, Paige and Charlotte, both had long, dominant reigns to firmly entrench the idea that this was a belt with meaning, and the future of the strap looks bright indeed.

This match was indicative of the high quality of in-ring competition that the women of NXT bring to every event. Sasha Banks and Charlotte have an engaging backstory with nearly two years of interaction, and when they meet in the ring, they use every moment of it to its full advantage.

Seeing Charlotte and Banks square off, you can tell that they do know each other inside out. That's something that's easy for commentary to discuss, but it's less simple for it to come off naturally in the ring.

Fortunately, both The Boss and the heir to Flair can make it look easy. Both of them are technically proficient, but there's an underlying level of skill that allows them to build their matches around strong storytelling and character interaction.

While it would seem that Charlotte isn't long for NXT, she will certainly leave the division to which she's been integral in good hands. Banks is settling into her role as champion well, and there's plenty of talent waiting in the wings to knock her off her plinth.
