Pakistan Surprise South Africa, Ireland Triumph and More from Day 22

Rob LancasterMar 7, 2015

Saturday's action at the World Cup saw an upset in Group B—and it wasn't Ireland beating Zimbabwe in Hobart.

The Irish boosted their chances of finishing in the top four of the pool with a thrilling five-run triumph at Bellerive Oval.

Ed Joyce made 112 as the Associate nation piled up 331 for five. Their final total proved to be just enough, with Zimbabwe falling short despite a superb knock of 121 from Brendan Taylor.

Ireland now find themselves on six points, the same number as Pakistan after they recorded a surprising 29-run victory over South Africa.

The Proteas dismissed Pakistan for 222 in a match reduced to 47 overs apiece due to rain at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.

Chasing a revised target of 232, AB de Villiers made 77 but received little support from the rest of his team. South Africa were eventually bowled out for 202, meaning they too have six points to their name.

Delivery of the day

Mohammad Irfan put an early dent in South Africa's run chase when he produced a crackerjack of a delivery to get Quinton de Kock caught behind second ball for a duck.

However, the honour is going to be split between two bowlers: Pakistan's Sohail Khan and Ireland's Alex Cusack.

Sohail was the man who finally saw off South Africa captain De Villiers, who charged down the wicket but could only edge the right-armer through to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed behind the stumps.

Cusack, meanwhile, picked up the pivotal scalp of Taylor during Zimbabwe's reply in Hobart.

Despite being out in the middle for nearly two hours, Taylor was completely fooled by a slower ball from Cusack, resulting in him popping up an easy catch to Kevin O'Brien inside the circle.

Catch of the day

Dale Steyn's catch to dismiss Ahmed Shehzad may not just be the best of the day—it could end up being the best of the tournament.

It seemed Shehzad might get away with an aerial flick over mid-wicket, only for Steyn to somehow make up the ground from his position at mid-on to make a stunning grab.

With a Superman dive, the pace bowler somehow managed to cling on to the ball just before it hit the turf.

Steyn started the celebrations by holding the ball up behind him as his face slid into the ground, bending himself into a shape that suggests he could yet have a career as a contortionist.

Shot of the day

Sarfraz Ahmed had been made to wait for his chance in the Pakistan team.

Some dismal displays at the top of the batting order previously in the tournament finally opened the door for the wicketkeeper-batsman—and he duly smashed his way through it.

The right-hander made a run-a-ball 49 versus South Africa before he was run out just shy of a second one-day half-century for his country.

His innings included three sixes, all of them launched over the mid-wicket boundary during the same over. They were all equally as good as each other, so take your pick as to which one you like the most.

Spinner JP Duminy was the poor bowler on the receiving end. He was taken for 21 in the over as the trio of blows only provided catching opportunities for members of the crowd.

Sarfraz also excelled with the gloves on, taking six catches behind the stumps as he replaced the inconsistent Umar Akmal.

Pakistan fans could be forgiven for wondering just why he had not been picked before in the competition.

Celebrate good times

I think Pakistan's supporters rather enjoyed their victory over South Africa:

Mind you, fans of Ireland were quick to celebrate their team doing well:

Sunday at the World Cup

The co-hosts are both in action on Sunday, starting with unbeaten New Zealand taking on Associate nation Afghanistan at McLean Park, Napier.

Australia's task looks a little tougher in Sydney. They go up against Sri Lanka at the SCG in a fixture that should go a long way in deciding who finishes second behind the Kiwis in Group A.
