Gayle Goes 19 Innings Without an ODI Hundred Against India and More from Day 21
India and West Indies locked horns in Perth on Friday, and India continued their unbeaten run in the tournament by beating the Windies by four wickets.
It was a low-scoring affair with West Indies managing just 182 runs after winning the toss and deciding to bat first. Only Jason Holder managed a score of significance, hitting 57 off 64. Mohammed Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers, taking three for 35.
India stumbled through their reply but got home in the end, as the Windies continued to struggle through their campaign.
India now have four wins out of four, and they have qualified for the quarterfinals. West Indies are fourth after five matches and can still be caught by Ireland.
The Gayle slump and Vettori searching for a landmark
It's been 19 innings since Chris Gayle scored a century against India. The last one came back in 2006 and since then, he has scored just 450 runs at an average of 23.68 with seven single-digit scores, including four ducks. In comparison, Gayle had scored 770 runs in his first 17 ODI innings against India at an average of 45.29 with four centuries and two fifties (stats are courtesy of ESPNCricinfo).
Elsewhere, Daniel Vettori is on the verge of becoming the first New Zealand player to take 300 wickets in ODI. Currently on 298 scalps, Vettori has a chance to pass the landmark when the Black Caps take on Afghanistan on Sunday.
The fans keep turning out in their numbers
It doesn't matter where India play in the world, there's always a big ground present to support them. That was evident once again at the WACA on Friday with a big contingent of Indian supporters backing their team.
Shot of the day
MS Dhoni was one of just four players to hit a six in the match. An upper cut down to third man in the 32nd over helped him release the pressure just a little bit:
Delivery of the day
An unlikely candidate for delivery of the day, but Dwayne Smith deserves some credit for the ball that dismissed Suresh Raina. It was short, just outside off, and a top edge through to the keeper saw India stutter to 107-5.
Catch of the day
Jerome Taylor's delivery to dismiss Shikhar Dhawan was superb. It was the perfect length in the corridor and angled in just a touch. Dhawan's push with a slightly angled bat saw him edge through the Darren Sammy in the slips, snatching a good catch, to help put India under pressure early on.
Run out of the day
A comedy of errors resulted in Marlon Samuels being run out. Chris Gayle mishit a ball that fell short of a diving Mohit Sharma, and Marlon Samuels called him through for a single. Gayle was ball-watching, and both batsmen ended up at the same end, with Sharma throwing the ball to the other end to Virat Kohli, who disrupted the stumps.
What Saturday holds
South Africa and Pakistan play each other in Auckland, where rain is threatening to ruin the party, while Ireland and Zimbabwe play each other in Hobart. Ireland have a chance to qualify for the next round but need to beat Zim in order to do so. Vernon Philander and JP Duminy have both been declared fit for South Africa, as per ESPNCricInfo.
