Rey Maualuga Re-Signs with Bengals: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldMar 5, 2015

Linebacker Rey Maualuga will be returning to the Cincinnati Bengals, retaining his spot as a key fixture in the team's front seven after agreeing to a new three-year contract on Thursday.

The Bengals' official Twitter account reported the news of Maualuga's signing, which comes before he was due to hit free agency:

NFL Network's Albert Breer reported that the deal is worth $15 million with $4.5 guaranteed.

Maualuga has been a physical presence and an emotional leader for the Cincinnati defense, which has driven the franchise to three consecutive playoff appearances.

However, the current Bengals nucleus has failed to notch a postseason win in those trips. Retaining someone like Maualuga, who knows how to get there and has the edge to get over the hump, is key to Cincinnati's immediate future outlook.

There weren't too many pricey free agents for the Bengals to hold on to, so ensuring Maualuga stayed wasn't too much of a problem for the cap-affluent front office.

Pro Bowl linebacker Vontaze Burfict is coming off of microfracture knee surgery, so Maualuga becomes all the more valuable.

Paul Dehner Jr. of The Cincinnati Enquirer alluded to Burfict's situation in his analysis of Maualuga staying in CIncinnati:

The Bengals lack depth at linebacker, and they finished last in the NFL with just 20 sacks last year. Andrew Perloff of The Dan Patrick Show offered a potential addition Cincinnati could pursue based on the organization's culture:

With Maualuga sticking around and defensive tackle Geno Atkins hopefully stepping up his play after a lackluster 2014 campaign, Cincinnati can raise its defensive play even more.

General manager Mike Brown must explore an all-around upgrade on defense, even with his savvy decision to keep Maualuga a Bengal.

The team still needs another edge-rusher to help its aging secondary, but Maualuga's familiarity with the Bengals' current personnel and second-year coordinator Paul Guenther enhances Cincinnati's chances of a fifth straight playoff berth.
