Five MMA Bouts I'd Knock Someone's Lights Out To See
Super fights and grudge matches are what fans live to see.
We all love to speculate about potential match-ups and outcomes. One reason I love MMA is that for the most part, I get to see the fights I want: The UFC does a great job of putting together intriguing matches that the fans will enjoy.
Call me greedy but I just want more.
Here we go...
5. Kenny Florian vs. Diego Sanchez II
This fight has all the makings of a great fight and of all the fights on this list, this is the one that we will likely see sometime in the not too distant future. This would be a rematch of the TUF 1 Middleweight finale in which Sanchez dominated and overwhelmed Florian.
Both of these fighters have come a long way since then.
Florian has fought for the LW title twice and come up short both times.
Sanchez was climbing the ranks of the WW division before dropping consecutive fights to Josh Koshcheck and John Fitch. Sanchez has since moved to the LW division where he has made his presence known and earned himself the next shot at BJ Penn.
I feel that Florian takes this fight. I still see him as the No. 2 LW in the UFC. Florian may not have the advantage in KO power and wrestling but he has the tools to put Sanchez away.
Florian is dangerous in the clinch, his striking is always improving, his BJJ is top level, and his conditioning in on the same level as Sanchez’s. Sanchez would look to take this fight to the ground and I see Florian taking his back and sinking in the choke.
4. BJ Penn vs. Jake Shields
I love high level BJJ and these are the fighters that exemplify this great art.
Jake Shields is a disciple of Cesar Gracie and a member of the "Scrap Pack." BJ Penn is...well they call him the "Prodigy" for a reason. Both of these guys are masters of the ground game and I think it would be fun to see them roll.
Standing up, I think, there is no doubt that even with the size advantage, Shields is not at the same level as Penn. Penn has a great chin and is a very technical boxer by MMA standards.
On the ground Shields is as lethal as they come. Shields is comfortable in all positions. Penn is just plain amazing to watch on the ground. Penn's flexibility and dexterity are truly his biggest weapons. Penn can simply move his body in ways that other humans cannot.
This would be one of the best displays of BJJ in the history of MMA. Penn wins this fight on the ground via rear naked.
3. Anderson Silva vs. Gegard Mousasi
These are two of the best strikers in the game today. Silva is the P4P king and Mousasi is flying up the rankings with every fight.
Both men are very dynamic on the feet. Mousasi looks to be the aggressor more and Silva is the consummate counter puncher.
This would be an exciting fight but would not make it out of the first round. Silva's pinpoint accuracy and ability to elude damage give him the clear edge.
Mousasi is the heir apparent to Silva’s P4P throne, make no mistake about it.
2. Anderson Silva vs. Georges St. Pierre
As much as most fans in the UFC would like to see this fight happen, I doubt it ever will.
St. Pierre has stated that if this fight were to take place he would need to take time and put on the extra weight the right way. I don't see the UFC holding up the division for that amount of time.
A lot of people will say that this is not a good match-up because of Silva's power and St. Pierre's questionable chin. These people are morons.
George St. Pierre is the best wrestler in all of MMA. St. Pierre is a dynamic striker in his own right, and has lightning fast kicks. His ability to pass an opponent’s guard is unfathomable.
Silva is arguably the best striker in all of MMA and he is a BJJ black belt, but he does not have a good wrestling base.
St. Pierre is not stupid and would not try to stand and trade with Silva. St. Pierre would do what he does best, takedown, ground and pound, and grind out the victory. I truly believe the St. Pierre would be able to take Silva down without much of a problem and control him on the mat.
Silva does have a good guard, as we all saw in the Lutter fight but St. Pierre has shown his ability to pass a top level guard in his rematch with BJ Penn. Silva's guard is nowhere near as good as Penn's.
Georges St. Pierre wins this fight via decision.
1. Brock Lesnar vs. Fedor Emelianenko
The unstoppable force meets the immovable object.
Wow, this would be fun to watch. Many people feel that Fedor is far out of the league of Lesnar. While this is true in the technical aspect, Lesnar is a wrecking machine and would fare well in the fight.
Fedor is quite possibly the greatest MMA fighter of all-time. His lone loss came by way of controversial stoppage. His striking is unquestioned and is ground games is unmatched at HW.
Lesnar is still a baby in the sport but has managed to learn on the fly and become the UFC HW champ in the process. His skill set lies in his wrestling base and his athletic ability.
People always say that skill beats size any day, while this holds true 90 percent of the time it would not be the case this occasion.
Lesnar has a blend of size, speed, power, and agility that is unheard of in normal human comprehension. Fedor has beat bigger men but not with Lesnar's unique attributes.
Lesnar takes this fight to the ground and controls Fedor there. Lesnar is strong enough and skilled enough in wrestling and body control to smother Fedor. Once Lesnar has worn him down he would club his way to victory.
Lesnar wins in dominating fashion via TKO.
That’s it. Those are the five fights I want to see. Do you agree or disagree with my picks? What fights would you like to see?
