Most Dramatic Moments of the Week

Garrett BakerMar 5, 2015

Things are really heating up around the sports world, and that was more than evident this past week with all the action that went down.

The NHL and NBA are getting closer to the playoffs, the NFL offseason has begun to heat up and March Madness is just around the corner.

Here are the most dramatic moments from the past week in sports.

The Bills Get LeSean McCoy for Kiko Alonso

1 of 8

It's rare you see NFL blockbuster trades involving big name players. That is what made Tuesday's news so shocking.

The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to send LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for Kiko Alonsoa move that fundamentally shakes up each team and has pretty big implications for 2015 and beyond.

McCoy is one of the league's top running backs, and Alonso had an incredible rookie season before missing all of 2014 with a torn ACL.

It's hard to call either team a loser in this deal. Both of them received a really valuable player.

Florida Goaltending Carousel

2 of 8

This is definitely one of the weirder moments in sports for the entire year, and it's going to be a bit difficult to describe, so bear with me here.

In a contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs this past Tuesday, Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo started the game in net. He then left the game due to injury in the first period and was replaced by backup Al Montoya. This is normal, so far, but just wait.

Montoya then got injured in the third period, and so Derek Mackenzie, a center for the Panthers, raced back into the dressing room to suit up as the emergency goaltender. But Montoya came back in the game for a few minutes and a different emergency goaltender got dressed for Florida.

This new goalie on the bench was Robb Tallas, the goaltender coach for Florida who hasn't played in the NHL since 2001. But then Montoya decided he did have to come out of the game, and who but Luongo changed back out of his street clothes to get back on the ice.

It was certainly a whirlwind game for the Panthers, and they lost to Toronto 3-2.

Kansas Clinches Conference in OT

3 of 8

No. 9 Kansas hosted No. 20 West Virginia on Tuesday night with a chance to clinch the Big 12 regular-season title. The Mountaineers made the Jayhawks work for every inch of the court.

Kansas went into the locker room after the first half down by 14 points. It was down by as much as 18 points at one point, but Kansas scrapped back even without the help of leading scorer Perry Ellis, who was lost to a knee injury late in the first half.

Somehow, the Jayhawks managed to hit some big shots and force overtime, which is when Frank Mason III took over. He scored the final six points of overtime and Kansas played lockdown defense to solidify a 76-69 victory.

Stars vs. Islanders Goes to OT

4 of 8

The Dallas Stars and New York Islanders are not your typical rivals, but they treated fans in Dallas to a playoff-like atmosphere and some last-second heroics on Tuesday night.

The Stars went into the third period down 1-0 before promptly scoring two goals to put them in the drivers' seat.

With the clock ticking down and just seconds remaining, it seemed like the Stars had the win sealed. But then Anders Lee threw the puck at the net, got a lucky deflection off a skate and suddenly the Islanders had tied the game with a mere two seconds remaining in regulation.

It would have been easy to let that type of goal deflate a team, but the Stars came out roaring in overtime and Cody Eakin scored a beauty to give Dallas a big overtime win.

Kentucky Rallies to Make It 33-0

5 of 8

Man, Kentucky really does not make it easy on themselves, do they?

The No. 1 team in the nation and a team that's being discussed as one of the greatest ever should be able to easily put away a mediocre team like Georgia, but the Bulldogs gave the Wildcats all they had on Tuesday night.

The two teams went into halftime locked up at 32 each. That didn't last long after the half, as Georgia pulled out to a nine-point lead in the second half. But Kentucky would hit the gas pedal hard, going on an impressive 14-0 run to come back and preserve their perfect record behind Karl-Anthony Towns' 19 points and some lockdown defense.

Rockets Take Down Cavs in OT

6 of 8

In a marquee matchup featuring two of the biggest stars in basketball, the Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers put on quite a show.

While LeBron James is still the top player in the NBA, James Harden has been on an MVP-like tear this season and staked his claim for the trophy by leading the Rockets to an emotional win against LeBron's Cavaliers.

Houstonwas in control for much of the night, and although it never pulled away by a big margin, the team still took an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter.

But Cleveland rallied from behind and forced overtime, but then Harden and the rest of the Rockets clamped down in the extra period and jumped out to a lead.

LeBron actually had two free throws with 4.2 seconds left and a chance to tie, but he missed each of them to give Houston the victory.

Blues-Canucks Craziness

7 of 8

The St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks are two of the best teams in the Western Conference. Both are known for their tremendous pace of play. That was really on display this past Sunday.

The Blues got the scoring going with two early goals in the first period, but the Canucks would go on to score the next five goals of the game.

With a 5-2 lead and only 13 minutes remaining in regulation, Vancouver had to be feeling pretty good about itself. However, St. Louis started clamping down and capitalized on a couple Vancouver mistakes.

St. Louis went on to score three goals in roughly seven and a half minutes, forcing overtime. After both teams failed to score in the extra session, Christopher Higgins scored the winner in the shootout to redeem his Vancouver squad and get it two points.

Westbrook Dominates in Overtime

8 of 8

The Oklahoma City Thunder should be able to put away the lowly Philadelphia 76ers with ease, but it was a night of abnormality on Wednesday.

Russell Westbrook, returning from his injury with a mask to protect a fractured cheek bone, looked absolutely superhuman in a memorable performance.

He was all over the court all night, with a career-high 49 points and 16 rebounds. The point guard also added 10 assists to complete yet another triple-double, becoming the first player since Michael Jordan to register four consecutive triple-doubles.

But the Sixers somehow kept up with the Thunder, pulling out to a 15-point lead in the third period. However, OKC came back with a vengeance and then shut the door in overtime for a 123-115 victory.
