Adrian Neville, Samoa Joe and Latest WWE NXT Developmental News

Ryan DilbertMar 4, 2015

WWE NXT fans have reason to be excited as the latest tide of news comes in.

Adrian Neville is willing to bet that he is headed to the main roster soon, and Samoa Joe looks set to follow a return to Ring of Honor with a run in developmental.

The former bit of info is not surprising. Neville has every reason to believe the main roster awaits him. He's proved again and again to be one of the top prospects at WWE.

As for Joe, after word got out that he was headed to ROH, it looked unlikely that he would join WWE's developmental system. That is reportedly set to change.

In other NXT news, controversy swirls around Bill DeMott, prospects join a social campaign and Sasha Banks gets set to be part of WWE's video game franchise.

Bill DeMott Controversy

1 of 5

NXT's head trainer is at the center of a firestorm: Several prospects have accused Bill DeMott of abuse.

Mike Johnson recapped the controversy on PWInsider.

Austin Matelson (who wrestled as Judas Devlin) alleges that DeMott abused him during his time at WWE developmental. Matelson claims that DeMott kicked him in the leg while he was wearing a medical boot for a broken leg.

He also contends that DeMott used abusive language that included homophobic slurs.

Ryan Collins, another former WWE developmental prospect, posted a letter making similar claims. He recounts DeMott making homophobic slurs, slapping him on the head while he was recovering from a concussion and threatening other wrestlers.

WWE made a statement regarding Matelson's allegations, writing, "WWE took the accusations made two years ago by Austin Matelson very seriously, conducted a full investigation and was unable to validate the claims." The company has not yet responded to Collins' claims.

Jason Powell adds on ProWrestling.net, "It's worth noting that former developmental wrestlers Chase Donovan, Chad Baxter and Kevin Matthews made similar accusations about DeMott back in 2013 on the Two And A Half Wrestlers podcast."

If this is all true, WWE has to be decisive in its response. This is not a clash of old-school coaches and new-school wrestlers.

There is a distinct difference between hard-nosed coaching and abuse. A drill sergeant may be loud and abrasive to his recruits but would be punished for kicking someone's medical boot or striking a concussed soldier.

Another investigation is in order.

Adrian Neville Talks WrestleMania, Move to the Main Roster, More

2 of 5

Adrian Neville provided a number of notable quotes in a recent interview with The This is Awesome Show (h/t PWInsider).

On whether there is friction between the main-roster stars and the NXT prospects, Neville said, "I don't think that's the case at all. I don't think that's true at all."

He also believes that NXT should be showcased at WrestleMania 31. On that topic, the former NXT champ said, "I feel like, we put out a product that's just as good as the main roster. So, I'd say yes."

With the show fast approaching, the most likely scenario is that some NXT stars will get into the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. There are still a lot of spots left for that bout.

The key takeaway, though, concerns when he will join the main roster. He has long been atop the NXT food chain and has worked several WWE live events. His call-up may be imminent, but WWE apparently hasn't told him that.

When asked if he would be on the main roster in the next six months, he said, "I very much hope so. I can't tell you for definite, because the truth is, I don't know. If I was a betting man, I'd bet on yes."

It sounds as if WWE hasn't laid out a plan to Neville for his future, which is odd. If a third basemen was tearing it up at Triple-A, he would likely have some conversations about moving up to the majors.

Perhaps Neville is just trying to keep from spoiling a surprise.

Samoa Joe Expected to Join NXT

Yes, Samoa Joe is going home to Ring of Honor, but a stop at NXT looks to be next on his list.

Pro Wrestling Torch's Sean Radican reports, "Samoa Joe is expected to sign with WWE to join the NXT developmental roster later this year."

That's tremendous news. If this pans out and Joe does head to Full Sail University, WWE will get a hungry, talented wrestler with plenty to prove.

TNA did not properly utilize him at the end of his run with the company. Seeing what he can do in NXT's increasingly loaded talent pool will certainly be fun.

One can't help but have dream matches pop up in one's head.

NXT Prospects Participate in Campaign Against the "R-Word"

4 of 5

NXT continues to be a powerful member of the community. It has previously partnered with a variety of charities and can now add the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign to the list.

A number of prospects have tweeted their support of the campaign, including Bull DempseySawyer Fulton and Bayley.

The goal is to bring attention to how disparaging the words "retard" and "retarded" are. Athletes and actors have spoken up for Spread the Word to End the Word, and now it's NXT's turn.

Other News, Notes

Signs keep popping up that Sasha Banks is not far from making the main roster.

For one, as PWInsider's Mike Johnson reported, Banks was backstage for Monday's Raw. She also worked a pair of WWE events over the weekends. Pro Wrestling Torch reports that Banks and Tyler Breeze wrestled both the WWE live event on Feb. 28 in Toronto, Canada, and the March 1 show in Buffalo, New York.

And the NXT women's champ is set to step in the virtual ring as well. Banks noted on Twitter that she has been scanned for the WWE 2K16 video game.

Finn Balor is set to get a big opportunity as well. According to WWE's Polish Facebook page (h/t Wrestle Zone), Balor is scheduled to work a WWE house show in Warsaw, Poland, on April 14.

These chances to impress aren't handed out to everybody. As special as both Banks and Balor are, it's not surprising in the least to see WWE handpick them.

The safe bet is that by this time next year, both these stars will be doing their ring work on the main roster.
