Grading Detroit Red Wings' Deals at the 2015 Trade Deadline

Tom Urtz Jr.Mar 3, 2015

The Detroit Red Wings are a team that has made the playoffs for the past 23 seasons, so they are rarely in a position in which they have to make a move at the trade deadline.

With the team enjoying one of its best seasons in years, general manager Ken Holland made a couple of moves to bolster his roster, and they should make Detroit tougher to play against. The Red Wings were already a top Eastern Conference team, but they are even stronger after the deadline.

Here's a look at how Holland did at the deadline and how each move will impact the Red Wings.

Red Wings Acquire Erik Cole

1 of 3

To Detroit Red Wings: Erik Cole and 2015 conditional third-round pick

To Dallas Stars: Mattias Backman, Mattias Janmark and 2015 second-round pick

The Red Wings traded two tertiary prospects and a second-rounder from this year's draft for veteran goal scorer Erik Cole. The 6'2", 212-pound Oswego, New York, native is a Stanley Cup champion and a player who scores about 25 goals a season.

This year he has 18, and he is on pace to finish with about 27 goals. The Wings can use Cole in a second- or third-line role, and he will provide some veteran insurance for the playoffs.

Red Wings Acquire Marek Zidlicky

2 of 3

To Detroit Red Wings: Marek Zidlicky

The Red Wings were wise to acquire veteran offensive defenseman Marek Zidlicky from the New Jersey Devils.

The 38-year-old defender has lost a step, but he still has 23 points this season. He is going to see a reduction from the 21:56 he averaged per game with the Devils, and that will lead to him being more efficient.

Zidlicky is a top-four defender and a secondary power-play specialist at this point of his career, and he's a low-risk, high-reward add.

Red Wings Do Not Trade for Dion Phaneuf

3 of 3

The Red Wings were rumored to be in talks about acquiring Dion Phaneuf, but the price was simply too high. According to Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, the Leafs wanted top prospect Anthony Mantha, and the Wings wouldn't budge.

Dion Phaneuf would have helped the Red Wings immensely, but they were wise to say no dice to general manager Dave Nonis. Phaneuf is still likely to be dealt this summer, and the Wings may be interested if the price becomes more reasonable.
