His team-mates also worked hard to make an impression, with Faf du Plessis' 109 playing a major role in South Africa reaching 411/4 at the Manuka Oval, Canberra.

Kyle Abbott (4-21) took the bowling plaudits, with Morne Morkel (3-34) and Dale Steyn (2-39) also contributing massively.

Amla, Du Plessis and Others Highlight South Africa's Depth

Although Ireland's biggest problem of the day was that they couldn't out-think Hashim Amla, the overall quality of South Africa with bat and ball ensured they didn't get close to the 411 chase.

Amla posted the fourth highest total of the tournament with 159 runs. He worked at a good pace, hitting 20 boundaries and setting his tally in 128 balls, providing South Africa with an instant sense of control in what could have been a difficult encounter.

His persistence allowed the likes of Faf du Plessis to bat without pressure. The duo's 242-run partnership would have troubled any side in the competition, particularly when the team showed themselves to possess strength-in-depth when the pair eventually lost their wickets.

With David Miller (46) and Rilee Rossouw (61) putting up an unbeaten partnership, this almost felt like a watershed moment for South Africa. So much has been made of AB de Villiers' brilliance, and rightly so, but the tournament hopefuls showed they can work even when the 31-year-old isn't able to obliterate the opposition.

De Villiers managed 24 from nine balls before Andy McBrine sent him back to the clubhouse. The confidence of those around him in the middle-order is sure to make other sides sit up and take notice, though, as any notion of a one-man show was firmly dismissed.

Miller and Rossouw took control once De Villiers departed in a partnership which is likely to gain importance as the competition progresses.

South Africa's batting effort allowed Dale Steyn, Kyle Abbott and Morne Morkel to bowl without major pressure, pushing the side to the upper echelons of Pool B with a comfortable win.
