The Bears Don't Deserve Rex Grossman

Kevin BrownSep 23, 2007

IconDonovan McNabb recently stated that African-American QBs get more criticism than Caucasian QBs.

Apparently he's never heard of Rex Grossman.

For the last season and change, Grossman has made every mistake expected of a young QB—and been intensely and unfairly scrutinized by the national media for it.

The final straw for me came in Sunday night's game against the Cowboys, when even Al Michaels was openly campaigning for the "tried-and-true" Brian Griese.

My only question: What exactly is Griese tried-and-true at?

As a Florida Gator lifer, I've followed Grossman's career in the NFL, and had adopted the Bears as my favorite NFL team.

Now, though, I'm no longer a Bears fan.

In fact, I'm the furthest thing from it.

I've heard Grossman referred to as "the luckiest quarterback in the league." I'd love to have that explained to me.

It seems to me that the Bears offense is the luckiest collection of players in the league—they can drop as many passes, fumble as many balls, and miss as many blocks as they like...and the blame is always going to be pinned on Grossman.

No one cares to mention that Chicago's "best" wide receiver would hardly be a passable second option on most other teams.

Lovie Smith calls the Bears a running team, but no one seems to care when Cedric Benson averages less than three yards per carry and fumbles the ball in two of three games this year.

The great Bears defense, meanwhile, couldn't stop Tony Romo, and made Marion Barber III look like Emmitt Smith.

Don't worry though, guys—Rex Grossman threw some interceptions when everyone in the stadium knew he'd be throwing on every down, so he'll catch all the flak on Monday.

You just keep doing what you're doing—and pretending you aren't at fault.

Here's my solution for all of the Bears' problems:

Bench Rex Grossman.

Play Brian Griese.

This will lead to one of two outcomes:

Possibility No. 1 is that Griese is indeed better than Grossman, and he helps the Bears return to the Super Bowl. They'll win this time, because Grossman is no longer there to make mistakes.

Possibility No. 2 is that Griese is ineffective and the reins get handed back to Grossman. In Rex's best year with the Florida Gators, Steve Spurrier kept him on a short leash—he'd pull him during games in favor of Brock Berlin...and Grossman would come back more focused and determined.

Things may work that way in Chicago if Griese proves to be the lackluster QB he's been his whole career.

All I know is that I'm going to start a new Franchise in Madden '08 and trade Rex immediately...just so I don't have to keep looking at him in a Bears uniform.

As for Al Michaels, Jay Mariotti, and all those faithless Chicago fans:

I hope you finally get what you've been asking for—the "great" Brian Griese.
