Minnesota Wild Working Hard To Sign Another Forward: Tanguay or Comrie?
According to hockey30.com, the Wild and free agent center Mike Comrie have come to terms on a deal, but general manager Chuck Fletcher has told Comrie to wait as he still holds hope that he'll be able to get free agent left wing Alex Tanguay to sign instead.
Since Fletcher was unable to sign Saku Koivu earlier in the season, he's been looking for another "top-six forward."
Offensively speaking, Tanguay would most likely be the better option. He is only 29-years-old so he still has plenty of years ahead of him in the NHL. Tanguay has great speed, great hands, and can be a great set-up man as well as being able to bury the puck.
In 659, career games spanning nine NHL seasons, he has 193 goals (avg. 21.4 goals per season) and 387 assists (43.0 assists per season).
On the other hand, Mike Comrie would be another option at center for the Wild, a position that could be considered a weakness when looking at their forwards.
Also fairly young at 28-years-old, Comrie is a versatile player who can also play on the wing when needed and is also capable of putting up decent numbers. In 525 career games spanning eight NHL seasons, Comrie has 154 goals (19.25 goals per season) and 184 assists (23.0 assists per season).
With only a few million left in cap room, will Fletcher land one of these remaining free agent forwards? Both would certainly help out the Wild, but one can't help and wonder if the Wild would be able to make better use of their cap room by making a trade for a skilled forward with several teams that are in cap trouble.
Rumored players that might be available this route would be Phil Kessel in Boston, Patrick Sharp in Chicago and possibly Jonathan Cheechoo in San Jose.
Either way, take it as a rumor for now, but it looks like Fletcher is still working on getting another skilled forward to help light up the scoreboard in St. Paul this fall.
