Juventus' Dream Summer Transfer Window Shopping List

Adam DigbyFeb 22, 2015

So far, 2015 has begun very well for fans of Juventus. With Tuesday’s last 16 Champions League tie drawing ever closer, supporters can proudly look upon the club’s smooth passage to the Coppa Italia semi-finals as proof of their form since the turn of the year.

Also enjoying a comfortable lead atop the Serie A standings, Massimiliano Allegri and his players have undoubtedly done well so far this term. Having enjoyed a dominant period of success in recent years, thoughts quickly drift to the summer and what business the Bianconeri may look to complete in the transfer market.

What follows is a look at what might constitute a dream summer for Italian football’s grand Old Lady, broken down by position and seeing how director general Beppe Marotta could strengthen an already excellent squad.

Goalkeeper

With Gigi Buffon showing few signs of aging, the questions here surround who will continue to be the back-up to the club captain. Marco Storari’s contract expires this summer, and perhaps the first order of business here would be to extend that, committing the goalkeeper to one more year in Turin.

The 38-year-old has proven to not only be a solid deputy but also a valuable member of the squad, a veteran presence and calming influence in what can be an extremely high-pressure environment. Behind him, Rubinho offers little, and replacing him with Nicola Leali would be the perfect solution.

While many may argue the player—currently on loan at Cesena—may need one more year of experience elsewhere, his return would certainly form part of an ideal summer.

Defence

Comfortably boasting the meanest defence in Europe’s top five leagues, the Bianconeri have already strengthened their impressive back line for next summer. According to their official website, the co-ownership deal for Empoli star Daniele Rugani has been cancelled, meaning he will return to the club this summer.

That aside, perhaps the only other need is at left-back, where a viable alternative to Kwadwo Asamoah and Patrice Evra would be useful. The presence of Paolo De Ceglie might preclude such a move but in a dream scenario the signing of Torino’s Matteo Darmian or Ricardo Rodriguez of Wolfsburg would be ideal.

Midfield

Not selling Paul Pogba is perhaps the beginning and end of most dream scenarios for Juventus, and it certainly forms the basis of this particular analysis. The Frenchman improves almost on a weekly basis and his continued presence would make an important statement about the direction Juventus are taking.

In addition to that, perhaps a signing such as Henrikh Mkhitaryan of Borussia Dortmund would seriously strengthen the side. A decision over the future of Roberto Pereyra would need to be made, considering the loan deal with Udinese contains a buy-out fee of €15 million if Juventus were to sign the Argentinian on a permanent basis.

Attack

4 of 4

As ever, any transfer debate usually concerns attacking options, and there are more key choices to be made here. Real Madrid’s buy-back options for Alvaro Morata do not take effect for another year, according to the Juventus website, while Carlos Tevez is expected to see out the final 12 months of his contract before returning to Boca Juniors in 2016.

In order to raise funds for reinforcements, the club may choose to move on Fernando Llorente, paving the way for Simone Zaza to move to Turin. The club have an option to purchase the Sassuolo striker this summer, and his excellent form makes that an interesting proposition and one they should certainly explore.

His team-mate Domenico Berardi is also currently co-owned by Juventus, and the attacking sensation could inject some much-needed pace and tactical variety. Signing him outright would be cheaper than a move for the likes of Mkhitaryan, and it caps a dream summer for the Bianconeri ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.

Proposed signings: Nicola Leali, Daniele Rugani, Ricardo Rodriguez, Simone Zaza and Domenico Berardi

Proposed sales/releases: Rubinho, Paolo De Ceglie, Fernando Llorente and Alessandro Matri
