5 College Football Teams Who Will Have Brand-New Offenses in 2015

Ben KerchevalFeb 19, 2015

Turnover. It's a drag. But it's part of the endless cycle of college football. Players come and go.

Sometimes, they simply depart in larger numbers.

In the following slides are teams that will have to significantly, if not completely, retool their offenses for the 2015 season. Whether it's the departure of a star player (or multiple star players) around which the offense was centered or a complete philosophical change, these five teams have a lot to work on over the next six months.

Which offenses will look completely new in 2015? Here are five experiencing the effects of heavy turnover.

Florida State

1 of 5

How'd you like to lose eight starters off of one offense? That's what Florida State is up against in 2015.

The team's leading receiver, Rashad Greene? Gone. How about the second-leading receiver, tight end Nick O'Leary. Also gone. So too is almost the entire starting offensive line.

That's not even mentioning Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston.

The Seminoles will look like a brand-new team on both sides of the ball, but the offensive attrition is glaring. Running back Dalvin Cook (pictured) and receiver Travis Rudolph go from dynamic freshmen to leaders in an instant.

Of all the new faces on offense, which quarterback succeeds Winston—Sean Maguire was the primary backup in 2014 and is basically the only player with experience—will be the most intriguing.

Alabama

2 of 5

About the only constant returning from Alabama's 2014 offense is coordinator Lane Kiffin. Let that sink in for a moment.

Tally up the departures for the Tide: Quarterback Blake Sims, running back T.J. Yeldon, fullback Jalston Fowler, the top three receivers (including Amari Cooper) and three offensive linemen.

Outside of Ohio State, Alabama should have the most intriguing quarterback battle in the country. Florida State transfer Jake Coker has one more chance to grab the job, but also competing are Alec Morris, Cooper Bateman, David Cornwell and true freshman Blake Barnett.

Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake are in line to be the next great running backs for the Tide, but who replaces Cooper in Kiffin's pass-friendly, attacking offense remains to be seen.

Texas

3 of 5

Texas' offense should look brand new next season both in the personnel and the actual X's and O's.

Quarterback Tyrone Swoopes is in no way guaranteed to be the starter next season. Running back Malcolm Brown is gone, as are receivers Jaxon Shipley and John Harris. But even more than the departures, the Longhorns could have a new look in the way they line up.

Last season, Texas' offense was at best a touch under average and at worst unsightly. That's led to some changes by head coach Charlie Strong, who admitted on signing day that the Longhorns could no longer resist the obvious, per The Dallas Morning News' Chuck Carlton

Most Texas high schools run some version of the spread, as Strong noted to Carlton, and the program had to cater to, not fight against, that fact. 2015 quarterback commit Kai Locksley explained as much in an interview with Chip Brown of Horns Digest

"

On my official visit, that’s one of the things I wanted to get clarified. What exactly is their scheme? And what exactly did they want to do?

(QB coach Shawn Watson) explained to me that it would be the same stuff they were running. But now it would be up-tempo and get things going a lot faster and quicker. So, it’s less of the quarterback having to decipher what’s going on with the defense at the line, and just kind of playing fast.

"

With a '15 class that has Strong's stamp on it, expect to see some freshmen crack the two-deep and establish themselves as future stars.

Florida

4 of 5

Florida's biggest losses heading into next season come along the offensive line and in the backfield. In all, the Gators lose four linemen, including D.J. Humphries and running back Matt Jones.

There's also the question over who will be Florida's starting quarterback next season. B/R colleague Barrett Sallee wrote earlier this month that freshman Treon Harris is one of three SEC quarterbacks most likely to lose his job next season.

Who would replace Harris? Redshirt freshman Will Grier, a former 4-star prospect, according to 247Sports, fits the more prototypical mold that head coach Jim McElwain has worked with in the past.

So, similar to Texas, Florida will have several new starters on offense and will have a different look. The good news is running back Kelvin Taylor, who was the team's second-leading rusher in '14, returns as a cornerstone of the offense.

Mississippi State

5 of 5

Mississippi State is the third SEC school to make this list. The Bulldogs get quarterback Dak Prescott back, so he should be the best returning signal-caller in the conference. As Michael Bonner of The Clarion-Ledger writes, Prescott's return also means Mississippi State is in the early discussion for the SEC West title.

But beyond Prescott, the Bulldogs have to break in a lot of new starters.

Running back Josh Robinson is the biggest name to depart, but Ashton Shumpert should lead a stable of backs ready to pick up the slack. While leading receiver De'Runnya Wilson is back, some of the supporting cast, including tight end Malcolm Johnson, is not. Additionally, three offensive linemen, including center Dillon Day, are gone.

At one point in the '14 season, Mississippi State had arguably the most balanced offense in terms of rushing and passing yards. That's a credit to what head coach Dan Mullen has built in Starkville. He gets his prize quarterback for another year, so can Mullen make offensive magic again with a new-look supporting cast?
