Blount Should Wonder What's Next For Him

Leslie MonteiroAug 14, 2009

An old friend reappeared to the Timberwolves organization in the aftermath of the Quentin Richardson trade last night. The Timberwolves acquired Mark Blount for Richardson in Kahn's latest attempt of making a trade, and then trading that player in return for something else.

Richardson's time with the Wolves was short to the point this writer sarcastically asked himself about his favorite Richardson moment as soon as this trade was announced.

There won't be any favorite Part Two moment of Blount either. Odds are he will likely be released or traded soon, and it can't come soon enough after a forgettable experience of watching Blount the first time.

Blount thought he could have gotten playing time because someone wanted him after languishing on the bench for the Heat. He needs to think again.

There is no reason for him to be around. He peaked long time ago after a good year under then-Timberwolves coach Dwane Casey.

For some reason, Casey got the most out of Blount by getting him to play defense and score points from the paint. This might have been Casey's biggest strength as the Timberwolves coach along with having his team compete for a playoff spot in January 2006 when he was unfairly fired.

After Casey left, Blount became who he was, which is being a player that never cared much for contact or playing hard.

It's amazing Blount lasted this long considering he has not done much after couple of decent years. It was surprising that he was still playing professional basketball since we haven't heard much from him last year.

David Kahn and Kurt Rambis publicly admitted the Wolves are in the business of player development during Rambis' introductory press conference this week so that eliminates Blount's chances of staying with the team.

It does not make sense either for him to stay. Even if he miraculously produces by staying, it does not make sense since this team is not winning any time soon.

Blount has a history of being lazy and not caring, and that's not what Kahn and Rambis want out of the players in the organization.

Dealer Kahn will try to get something out of nothing in Blount, but good luck to him in getting anything in return. If Kahn somehow gets a draft pick, it will be an accomplishment.

Odds are the Wolves will swallow Blount's salary, which is not expensive.

Blount has to wonder where he is going to go.

When a player is on the decline for the last four years, his chances of getting a job are never good. Maybe the Clippers could acquire Blount.

After all, the Clippers have this odd fascination with players that played for the Timberwolves in recent years.

Sam Cassell, Ricky Davis, Mark Madsen, Sebastian Telfair, Craig Smith and others come to mind so Blount would fit in real well.

This is not the Timberwolves' problem though. That's Blount's problem.

At this point, Blount is better off looking for another line of work.
