Manchester United's 5 Most Impressive FA Cup Wins
Manchester United have a pretty stellar record in the FA Cup. The 11-times winners of the trophy have had their fair share of impressive results.
Today marks the anniversary of one of them, an 8-0 thrashing of Yeovil Town in 1949, played at Maine Road as United were yet to return to a war-damaged Old Trafford.
But where does that rank in United’s most impressive FA Cup wins? Does it crack the top five?
Candidates for consideration include games with big margins of victory and important wins over good sides.
Let’s take a look at the best of the bunch.
Manchester United 4 Arsenal 0: 5th Round 2008
1 of 5
Manchester United didn't win the FA Cup in 2008, thanks to a tough-to-take quarter-final defeat to Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth.
Being unable to do so denied Sir Alex Ferguson's last truly great side the chance to win the treble. Earlier in the competition, it had felt like a legitimate proposition thanks to the fifth-round obliteration of Arsenal.
United used to consider Arsenal to be direct rivals (more of which later), but by 2008, in truth, Arsene Wenger's side had lost much of its lustre.
United were fully in stride by February of 2008, and Wayne Rooney delivered what BBC Sport described as "a virtuoso solo display" to help the Red Devils demolish the Gunners.
Manchester United 2 Liverpool 1: 4th Round 1999
2 of 5
The spirit of 1999 was born in this game. Trailing from the second minute until two minutes from time, United displayed all of the tenacity, belief and composure that would carry them through a truly remarkable season.
The FA Cup run played a pivotal role in establishing the mythos of the '99 side. After all, this was not the last time Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would score a stoppage-time winner during that magical season.
United's resolve was incredibly impressive during this game, and it earns its place on this list for that.
Manchester United 4 Brighton and Hove Albion 0: Final Replay 1983
3 of 5
An FA Cup final replay feels like an anathema to modern ears. However, such things did, indeed, exist, and in 1983, Ron Atkinson's side won the replay against Brighton and Hove Albion in dominant fashion.
Brighton had shocked United by mustering up a 2-2 draw in the first game. There would be no repeat of the near-upset though, as a Bryan Robson-inspired side won the replay comfortably. Atkinson would go on to further success in the FA Cup, but this sits on this list for being a time United made winning look easy.
Manchester United 4 Chelsea 0: Final 1994
4 of 5
With a starting XI lifted almost directly from Status Quo's legendary track "Come on You Reds," one of the greatest United sides absolutely destroyed Chelsea in the 1994 final.
The two Eric Cantona penalties and goals from Mark Hughes and Brian McClair may have all come in the last third of the game, but the scoreline didn't flatter United, who were the very definition of "impressive" en route to their first double.
Superb football from a superb team.
Manchester United 2 Arsenal 1: Semi-Final Replay 1999
5 of 5
The performance against Chelsea in the final is unlucky to miss out on the top spot, but it is pipped by this legendary match.
It was a game that had everything. There were penalty saves, superb goals, a sending off and, of course, Ryan Giggs' infamous bare-chested celebration.
United made mistakes in this game—unlike the almost flawless football they played in some of the other games in this list—but ultimately displayed the astonishing resilience and quality that defined the greatest season in the club's history.
If that is not impressive, it is hard to know what is.
