Sell the Farm: Top 25 Recap

Ron JohnsonSep 23, 2007

The college football weekend left plenty of twists, turns, surprises, and upsets. With that being said, let’s not waste any more time finding cheesy clichés and get right into it.

Here’s the rundown of a wild weekend on the gridiron.

#1 USC 47, Washington State 14

John David Booty went 30-38 for 302 yards and four touchdowns and helped the Trojans increase their lead over the SEC this season. The Trojans had a cakewalk against the Cougars, and despite eight penalties, USC dominated what appeared to be a legitimate ball game. USC took advantage of a vulnerable Washington State team by racking up 509 yards of total offense. As for the Cougars, Alex Brink gave them two touchdowns against the always impressive Trojan defense.

The Tigers passing game was beyond mediocre last night, but thanks to some huge grounding and pounding, the Tigers were able to keep their home win record intact as they staved off the Gamecocks of South Carolina. The biggest play of the game would have to be the fake field goal/no look toss to LSU kicker Colt David for the go ahead touchdown for the Tigers.

Icon#3 Florida 30, Ole Miss 24

The Gators relied heavily on the arms and legs of Tim Tebow on Saturday. Tebow rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns and threw for two more as the defending national champions survived a scare from the Rebels of Mississippi. Percy Harvin helped the with 121 recieving yards, as the Gators remained unbeaten and focused for their October 6th showdown in Baton Rouge with LSU.

Icon#4 Oklahoma 62, Tulsa 21

Boomer Sooner! Oklahoma looked unstoppable on Friday as they improved to 4-0 with a stomping of Tulsa. Sam Bradford improved his Heisman resume with two long touchdown bombs to Juaquin Iglesias, while Allen Patrick ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns. The Sooners won the battle against the Hurricanes in impressive fashion, as they scored at least 50 points in their fourth consecutive game.

Icon#5 West Virginia 48, East Carolina 7

If anyone doesn’t believe that the Big East is serious about competing for the BCS National Championship, they might want to tell Patrick White that. White threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Mountaineers put up almost 600 yards of total offense en route to a big tuneup victory over East Carolina. The Mountaineers kept on pace with the Pac 10, Big XII, and SEC, as they prepare for their Friday showdown with #23 South Florida. Can you say Game of the Week?

Icon#6 California 45, Arizona 27

Justin Forsett rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns to settle an old score for the Golden Bears. Cal has been on a roll when the revenge card has been played this season. The Bears destroyed Tennessee in the season opener, and three weeks after that, they avenged the loss that may have possibly cost them an outright Pac 10 title and a trip to the Rose Bowl.

Icon#7 Texas 58, Rice 14

Attention Horns fans—Texas has awakened from their coma! Colt McCoy led the charge with 333 yards passing, as the Longhorns recorded their first big blowout of the season. After a couple of close calls—not to mention some off the field problems—Texas won in impressive fashion. Limas Sweed snagged two touchdown passes, and Jamaal Charles added three touchdown runs as the Horns piled up 560 yards on offense to respond to the message sent by Oklahoma.

Icon#8 Ohio State 58, Northwestern 7

Todd Boeckman threw for three touchdowns as Ohio State flat out embarrassed the Wildcats of Northwestern in Columbus. It seemed that every time you turned around, the Buckeyes were making it rain. The Wildcats were unable to recover from a 28-0 deficit early in the first, but did manage to keep the Buckeyes from scoring in the 4th…Ok, that was a poor attempt at looking at the bright side for Northwestern.

Icon#9 Wisconsin 17, Iowa 13

The Badgers are slowly fading into nothing. Three games have put every Badger fanatic on the edge of their seat. Teams that Wisconsin normally blows out have sent a message to the Big Ten: Better back the Buckeyes. After the Nittany Lions somber loss to the Wolverines, and the Buckeyes beatdown on Northwestern, the Badgers are now in the hotseat. P.J. Hill can’t do it all…but his 4th quarter score gave the Badgers the victory. Expect Wisconsin to drop a spot or two with this not-so-impressive win.

IconMichigan 14, #10 Penn State 9

Hey! What do you know? There is a team in Ann Arbor…they just took a while to show up. After two straight heartbreakers at home, the Michigan Wolverines earned some mad crazy respect by extending JoePa’s losing streak and climbing even more out of the basement. Heisman candidate Mike Hart earned his keep by rushing for 153 yards on 44 carries, including the game winning touchdown in the 4th to put the Wolverines at .500 for the season.
