The Royal and Ancient Golf Club Announces 1st Female Members in History
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews has announced former world No. 1 Annika Sorenstam among the first group of female members to be inducted in the organisation's 260-year history.
As reported by The R&A, Sorenstam is joined by British golfing great Dame Laura Davies, former Scottish Sportswoman of the Year Belle Robertson and French favourite Lally Segard. American Renee Powell and Louise Suggs, co-founder and former president of the LPGA, have also been recognised.

George Macgregor, captain of the club, spoke of his delight. His comments were reported by the organisation's website:
"This is an historic day for the Club and we could not be more proud also to welcome women who have distinguished themselves in golf over many years and have been great players and champions.
They are extremely worthy additions to our roll of honorary members and will become ambassadors for the Club as they have been for the sport of golf throughout their careers.
"
This announcement marks the first time female golfers have been inducted into The R&A after September's 85 percent majority vote to open the club to both sexes. As reported by The R&A's official statement, more inductees are expected to be confirmed in the "coming months."
