Chelsea Transfer News: Latest on Filipe Luis, Danny Ings Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenFeb 8, 2015

Chelsea full-back Filipe Luis has reportedly told a former team-mate he's eyeing a return to Atletico Madrid after spending most of his time with the Blues on the bench during his first season in the Premier League.

According to AS (h/t beIN Sport's Tancredi Palmeri), the Brazil international told compatriot Miranda of his desire to return to Diego Simeone's squad:

Metro's Lewis Rudd elaborated on the story, noting the defender's lack of consistent minutes:

"

The 29-year-old Brazilian international only completed a £15.8m move to Stamford Bridge last summer, but has seen his first-team opportunities limited this season, having featured in just 10 games for the Premier League leaders.

And according to reports in Spain, an unhappy Luis has told former Atletico team-mate Miranda he wants a reunion at the Vicente Calderon Stadium with the defending La Liga champions.

"

It's worth noting AS is a Madrid-based newspaper that tends to focus on players linked to one of the Spanish capital's top clubs, Real Madrid and Atletico.

The 29-year-old was one of the biggest names moving to the Premier League in the summer, but with just five Premier League starts so far, via WhoScored.com, he hasn't fully lived up to the expectations.

That's hardly the Brazilian's fault. The duo of Branislav Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta has been superb throughout the current campaign, and any full-back would have difficulty fighting his way into Chelsea's starting XI.

Luis is a veteran contributor who joined the Blues from the La Liga winners and Champions League finalists. Going from such a situation to a role as a glorified bench player could be quite the shock. That said, he's yet to openly voice his displeasure with the current situation.

Reports he's unhappy are meaningless until the player actually confirms them, at which point the two sides could enter discussions. Jose Mourinho must love the fact he has a rotation of three class full-backs—unless Luis explicitly asks for a move back, he won't be leaving the club anytime soon.

Danny Ings continued his fine season for Burnley with another goal and an assist against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, and amid rumours linking him with a move to a number of clubs, including Chelsea, manager Sean Dyche spoke highly of the 22-year-old.

As reported by the Daily Star's Marc Williams, Dyche said:

"

He's a tremendous talent and we're delighted we stuck to our word and he's still a Burnley player.

He was excellent again today. He's effervescent, his movement, his quality at times.

He's growing into the league, he's understanding is better. Fantastic finish - he's on the move in the box again.

"

The young forward was linked with Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool throughout the winter transfer window, per Williams, and with numbers like these (via OptaJoe), it's easy to see why:

He's widely expected to join England's national team at some point in the near future, and plenty of interested clubs will likely come calling for his signature during the summer.

Pundit Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool in particular should push for his services, via the Liverpool Echo:

Chelsea are also linked with the young forward, but it's difficult to see why. Ings is no doubt a fine talent, but he doesn't have the physical stature to play the role of target-man in Mourinho's preferred system.

Diego Costa, Didier Drogba and Loic Remy are all big, thickly built strikers capable of scoring goals or holding up the ball and creating space for others. Scoring isn't their only task—the likes of Eden Hazard and Willian can take care of that as well.

With clubs like Liverpool also interested, Ings will be too expensive to be nothing but a bench option and a luxury player who doesn't fit a specific role for the Blues. Don't expect Mourinho to push for a transfer once the window reopens in July.
