2015 Signees Who Will Immediately Help Texas A&M

Damon SaylesFeb 10, 2015

No team wants to lose a player—or players—to either transfer or other personal reasons. In the last 24 hours, Texas A&M, according to 247Sports, will go into the 2015 season without the services of a former starter at linebacker in Jordan Mastrogiovanni and a receiver expected to compete for playing time in Kyrion Parker.

Fortunately for Kevin Sumlin, the Aggies signed a top-12 class featuring 25 athletes. The class includes three 5-star and 11 4-star players, all of whom will be competing for early playing time next season.

And one look at last year's depth chart, courtesy of Ourlads, shows that Sumlin likes to play his young guns if he feels they are worthy.

Sumlin is excited about the 2015 class—and rightfully so. He will have some freshmen looking to not only challenge for playing time but also find permanent starting roles. Here are five signees who could be immediate impact players for the Aggies in the fall.

5-Star DT Daylon Mack

1 of 5

Hometown (School): Gladewater, Texas (Gladewater)

247Sports Composite Rank: 14

247Sports Position Rank: 4

Consider Daylon Mack the prize defensive get for Texas A&M. The nation's No. 4 defensive tackle showed his talents against the best at the Under Armour All-America Game. Mack in ridiculously strong and plays low to the ground, making life difficult for offensive linemen to block him.

Texas A&M had its moments with a productive front line last season, and Mack's arrival only strengthens the defense's most consistent group. Imagine the possibilities with Mack coached by new defensive coordinator John Chavis and lined up on the line with defensive end Myles Garrett next season.

This tweet, in fact, may be something to watch.

5-Star WR Christian Kirk

2 of 5

Hometown (School): Scottsdale, Ariz. (Saguaro)

247Sports Composite Rank: 25

247Sports Position Rank: 4

Here's the advantage of Texas A&M's offense: A different receiver can be the hero each and every week. The Aggies love to spread the ball around, and it's a defensive coordinator's nightmare to try and figure out who will be the go-to option.

This is where a guy like Christian Kirk can flourish. Kirk's got the speed, strength and overall ability to be a successful slot receiver or outside receiver. As an early enrollee, he is on campus currently going through spring workouts and learning the offense—a major advantage compared to the other skill-position commitments in the class.

Don't believe a freshman can be the focal point of a Sumlin offense? Ask Speedy Noil. Or Kenny Hill. Or Johnny Manziel.

4-Star S Justin Dunning

3 of 5

Hometown (School): Whitehouse, Texas (Whitehouse)

247Sports Composite Rank: 134

247Sports Position Rank: 6

The secondary had its problems last year, and with Howard Matthews and Floyd Raven completing their senior seasons, there is room for a young safety to make some noise early. This is where Justin Dunning comes into play.

A shade under 6'4" and 204 pounds, Dunning has the height of a defensive end, the speed of a receiver and the ball instincts of a linebacker. He's an athletic safety who can become an electric playmaker if what he did in high school rolls over to the college scene.

Armani Watts had a good freshman season in the secondary for the Aggies. Dunning can have a similar year. He will have every chance to show his worth.

4-Star OT Keaton Sutherland

4 of 5

Hometown (School): Flower Mound, Texas (Marcus)

247Sports Composite Rank: 183

247Sports Position Rank: 14

Texas A&M has produced its share of NFL linemen in recent years, and it's done so by turning the good into elite with the help of coaching. Keaton Sutherland is a savvy lineman who already is good. There's a good chance Texas A&M can make him elite early.

At 6'5" and 293 pounds, Sutherland already has good size, and he has a frame where 20 or 30 pounds wouldn't hurt his lateral movement or overall quickness. Sutherland is a competitor, and you can bet he's eyeing a starting position, particularly with him being an early enrollee.

Cedric Ogbuehi is gone, which means a tackle spot is open in the fall. Look for Sutherland to battle for playing time.

5-Star QB Kyler Murray

5 of 5

Hometown (School): Allen, Texas (Allen)

247Sports Composite Rank: 33

247Sports Position Rank: 1

Perhaps the most anticipated position battle going into next year will be at quarterback. The Aggies have a proven leader in Kyle Allen, but Kyler Murray is the nation's top-ranked 2015 dual-threat quarterback for a reason. Murray is the real deal.

Here's the question: Is Murray out of high school—fresh off a 42-0 record and three consecutive state titles as a starter—a better option immediately than a freshman quarterback in Allen who saw five starts and led the Aggies to a Liberty Bowl win against West Virginia?

And then, another question arises: Will pro baseball steal Murray away from the Aggies? Murray is expected to be drafted high this year. A pro baseball signing bonus could win over all, but it's still to be determined.

Until then, you can bet that Murray will be preparing for a competitive battle against Allen.
